This is why we wear eye protection.
« on: September 20, 2023, 04:36:58 PM »
I got hit in the back of the left hand with a ricochet from 00 Buck Monday. This is why we wear eye protection. Instead of a sting, a WTF?, and a red, slightly bloody wound, it could have cost me the sight of one eye if it was a couple of feet higher. I already had my Oakleys on, and instead of switching to the new 10 buck shooting glasses that still had a sticker on one lens, I kept them on. Their website says, "Impact Protection  Oakley lenses are designed and tested under extreme high mass and high velocity circumstances to ensure uncompromising protection across a wide range of demanding conditions.", so I felt safe with them on. They offer more coverage that the shooting glasses, too. If I was wearing my Ray-Ban Aviators with glass lenses, I would have switched to the shooting glasses, for sure. I keep them in the padded case my new electronic ear muffs are in. This may not be the pellet that hit me, but it was the only one I saw lying on the ground right after that. I took the pics Tuesday. The 2 small dots on my hand are insect bites I scratched or something like that, but the big spot is where I was wounded.

Our club requires a very basic safety review before every match.  It includes "eye protection is required" sentence.  Usually the RO will point to the roof of the club house, which is visibly littered with lead splatter and say, "'nough said?"

On my first trip to Rio Salado in AZ I was amazed by the number of shooters who carry in their wallets a small zip lock bag with a sliver of lead in it. It is a piece pulled from their skin, mostly lips, cheeks or nose. When standing under the shade covers during shooting there is a constant sound of lead falling on the rooves.
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.

Glad you only got a stinger on your arm!
I’ve been grazed by one ricochet on the left forearm and years later one grazed the right. Neither left a mark. I don’t want to picture where the next might be.

I got hit in the shin by part of a 'turned-around' .38 wadcutter shooting bowling pins many moons ago. I was running the timer and the shooter slung one low and hit the leading edge of the table (which was steel angle) and it came back.
Eye protection is always a priority. I've even worn eye protection when hunting starting as a youth.
"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison

My best was a whole .44 slug in the chest.  Indoor range with a shredded rubber backstop.  Hit the backstop in a one in a gaziollon way that it bounced back.  Only hard enough to raise a welt.  Picked it up and gave it to the shooter.

Wow! I've only had .22 LRs bounce back at me before, and not leave a mark through my jeans.
