Thieves are using AiTags to steal cars. When they see a car they want, they stick the magnetic tag somewhere on the car. Then, in the middle of the night when you're sleeping, they come and get the car.
If someone steals your stuff with an AirTag on it, an hour later(?) it will alert them there's an AirTag nearby. And they can use their iPhone to tell it to chime so they can find it! Here's how to take the speaker out so it can't chime.

When you turn it on you can the area for AirTags and similar tracking tags that are outside of their owner's Bluetooth range. It may take up to 15 minutes after an item tracker is separated before you can find it. So if someone just dropped it in your pocket the scan could come up clean.
