10/22 Black Friday Special
« on: December 19, 2024, 04:02:03 PM »
From the Black Friday Thread.

Did some checking.  Ruger has 26 models of the 10/22, PLUS another 28 distributer versions.  And that doesn't count 3rd party versions not listed.  While there's a version for every taste, I got to wonder if having so many variations is self-defeating.  Bud's has 44 variations In Stock, but that includes discontinued models.

My model is under the Carbine selection.  Model 31210.  Cheapest one they make with an MSRP of $369.99.  The store was selling it for $219.99.  That's 40% off!  Bud's sells it for $209, btw, but anyplace else is closer to $279

I got the Ruger trigger group in and installed.  Miss Kitty is holding the barrel and stock for Christmas.   I've weighed everything as it came, (4.4# btw) and am anxious to get it together.  Day after Christmas I'll post pictures and full weight details.  <wishLes were still here>   I'll shoot it in January's Steel Challenge.

I was looking at the Fletcher Open Top 11/22 last year. You can pop the top off and take the bolt out to clean it a lot easier than a standard 10/22. I was also looking at the Desert Tech Trek-22 bullpup conversion. The 2 things are mutually exclusive, and I think I'd rather have a bullpup with a composite bull barrel. But the 11/22 receiver would be great in a non-bullpup.

Ruger, obviously hearing about stellar build out, felt threatened and has introduced two new light weight models.  Neither will take a front sight.  The competition model still weights over 4# and MSRP over $1k.

The barrels appear interesting and I wonder if they are going to be offered in the new 21 Sharp rimfire?

The 10/22 Takedown Lite doesn't have sights OR a Picatinny rail. It should have a rail built in like some of its clones do. They make the Competition Model in left-handed versions, with a chassis or regular stock with adjustable cheek rest. That's unusual for a semi-auto of any caliber. My best friend and his wife are both wrong-handed, or mixed-handed, but I think their sons are both right-handed. There was 1 in 4 chance they'd be left-handed too. IIRC my left-handed friend shoots right-handed. I remember him chopping down big weeds with his Marlin .22.

I hope the .21 Sharp gets the industry support it should and catches on. The .22 LR is 137 years old and still uses heeled bullets like the 179 year old BB Cap. A modernized version of .22 RF is WAY overdue.

As a left-hander, my main objection to the 10/22 and Charger is its wrong-sided ejection - I just find it more natural to work bolts and other away-from-trigger-area controls with my non-trigger hand. Threw an 07/SOT friend a curveball when I did that on his AK...

I don't know why Ruger doesn't make it switchable with a left side port.  Maybe swapping the ejector and extractor could prove difficult, but still not an unsurmountable problem.

Christmas and Miss Kitty gave me the TanddemKross barrel.  All was going fine, remember this build is for iron sights, but then I realized the raised cheek piece on the Hogue stock puts the head too high for iron sights.

Several options.

1 - grind/sand the cheek piece down.  Hate to that.  Would like it to match the red dot gun.

2 - grind off he top half of the stock stock, which is designed for a tapered barrel, so the new .92" barrel fits.  Again then wouldn't match the other gun.

3 - 3D print some spacers and raise the iron sights 1/2".

Ah.  That's what I'm trying out today as soon as I can get the appropriate length M-LOK bolts to hold the sights on.  If that's not satisfactory I'll reshape the stock stock since it didn't cost me anything and has nil resale value.

Here it is, in all it's glory  (Still missing Les.  He'd have all sorts of mods for me to make)

When I put on the Hogue stock (which is what's on my red-dot 10-22) the cheek piece was too high to line up the iron sights.  I tried both 8mm and 5mm spacers (nylon-black carbon with 100% infill) but they didn't seem to sit just right.  The sights were off by more than the adjustments could handle and the nylon seemed to compress a little bit more every time I put the wrench too it.  So i cut up the stock Ruger stock, taking away the top half of the forearm.   It's a pound lighter than the Hogue, which could be a slight disadvantage in handling recoil.  My initial test shooting at an indoor range produced a one hole, 10 round group at 50ft just resting on the range bag.  With my DeVang comp it comes in at 3.3#.   Original was 4.4# and with the Hogue stock 4.3#

Pictures below.  Hogue stock for comparison.  Will work out with it next week at the range.

[Side Note about MLOK]  People make both Imperial and Metric MLOK nuts and bolts.  TandemKross shipped Imperial (10-24).  I'm okay with that, but I think everything else I have is metric (4mm or 5mm - yes manufacturers use either or.)  Here's what donned on me, being a bear of slow wit,  The space between the shroud and barrel is limited.  Real limited in a .22lr.  So you can't just have any ole height spacer you want as you're limited to the various screw lengths, else they'll hit the barrel.  In this case you have to go by 1/8" increments since that's the various sizes Imperial screws commonly come in.  Here Imperial beats metric which varies sometimes 5mm and sometimes 10mm as you increment sizes.  However, I've learned spacers need to be metal.  I could join a Maker's Space and mill some, but it's not worth it.  I do however now have the STL 3D files if I want to later.
