Cerakote - Different application
« on: January 29, 2025, 12:20:39 PM »
I had wondered about this for a time and mentioned it to one of my fellow ICORE shooters.  Turns out he's a gunsmith and does Cerakote.

So what do you think.  Will they be easier to find in the grass and gravel?  He did three as a test and I'll take them out and use them in March along with the plain ones.  Dont' think he has a price in mind yet.

They should be easy to spot. There's a place here in Michigan that has .45 half moon clips, full moon clips, and unloading tools if you need more. I just saw it a couple hours ago and bookmarked the site. I don't know if they have anything in 9mm.

Mine are all TK.  Work well, don't rust, don't bust, don't collect dust.  Got about 44 for 929 and the same for 625.  That fits two of my Plano boxes perfectly and two Plano boxes fit in my range cart the same.

If you Book of Mug Shots, here's the link to the gunsmith I'm using.

Went to shoot today, Rimfire Rifle in Steel Challenge, and I took the yellow moon clips to show around.

Wear seems to be the biggest question at this point.  I'll take the 929 and actually fire it with these moon clips and see how dirty they get this week.

But, standing at one of the SC bays I tossed the clips over my shoulder and had my squad see how quickly they could spot them.

Also the copper head snake

Went to the range. Ran the three samples through 5 cycles of mooning, shooting and d'mooning. Around the clip where the case touches some coating rubbed off. To be expected. The rest of the discoloration was just that. One clip (the same one each time) was wiped clean after each use. All clips where loaded the same side forward each time. At the end the back side of the unwiped ones looked the same as the back of the one I wiped off. In the picture the cycle number is denoted by the empty brass. I'm thinking many cycles before the Cerekote is significantly affected were it no longer serves it's function.

The backs look brand new. The color looks like a close match to the spray paint I use on my steel targets.
