Cuban Bakery and Cafe

I was looking at something online from my credit union where I can earn points for using my debit card, which I very rarely ever do. So I started looking at places I could earn points on food. A guy's got to eat you know, even though I went to bed hungry and haven't eaten today. Then I started looking on Google Maps at the menu for Mimi's Cuban Bakery and Cafe on the other side of town. Besides the things I expected like the Cuban sandwich and Cuban espresso, there are a lot of things I never heard of. Like the Cuban Mamey milkshake, a treat made from the tropical mamey fruit grown in Cuba and parts of Central and South America. I looked up mamey on Wikipedia and it says, "The fruit's texture is creamy and soft, and the flavor is a mix of sweet potato, pumpkin, honey, prune, peach, apricot, cantaloupe, cherry, and almond." Wow! How could I not be interested? So maybe next week I'll get a bunch of stuff there. A sandwich, and flan for dessert of course, but they have a lot to choose from. It's only an 8 minute drive, so I can go there every day if I want to.

In metro-ATL I’ve only found one truly Cuban, Cuban restaurant.  There are many pretenders.  The last one we went to, a new place, the manager figured out before we place our order that we weren’t going to be a happy. (They didnt use real Cuban bread for starters).

If you’re in the ATL stop by the Havana Cuban Sandwhich Shop, Buford Highway.  Very not fancy.  Founded by a Cuban refugee in ‘76.

This lady is originally from Cuba and learned how to cook from her mother and grandmother, who she affectionately called “Mimi.” A local guy was one the first customers there in 2021. It was a mouthwatering experience he’s been deprived of for years. He and his wife moved to the Flint area from Miami in 1996, a few years after enduring Hurricane Andrew.

“The little cafes down there were just awesome. It was just amazing,” he said of his experiences while living in Florida and indulging in the offerings of the local shops. “I would take the kids to school in the morning and coming back we would just get some fresh bread and pastries and we just really miss that. This is so amazing to finally have something up here.”

A resident of Flint for 25 years, he surprised his wife with fried croquettes among other items from Mimi’s Cuban Bakery and Café. The business reminded him of the experiences that the local cafes of Florida gave him years ago. “We really have waited a long time for this,” he said, with excitement.

If it's good enough for people from Miami, it must be good Cuban food. Not that I would know the difference. The closest I've been was eating Cuban sandwich style potato chips. :) They're closed today but open 6-6, 6 days a week. The only way I'll be there at 6 am is if I need coffee.

This is making me wish that Arby's pulled pork didn't suck, or Jersey Mike's would add it to the menu. Closest thing to even a HALF decent Cuban here is at Amazon Go.

I was thinking about it yesterday when I was on the other side of the city, but couldn't remember where the place was. I got 6 teeth pulled Tuesday and my meals are less adventurous, anyway. Maybe next month I'll feel more like trying something new.

I just found it again on Google Maps. I got off !-69 and went north on Dort Hwy. And this place is a block or so south of the exit. That's one reason I didn't see it.

I made it to mine Wednesday with my best friend Bob.  We visit there about once a quarter.  After we parked we saw a guy park in the no parking zone who ran in the kitchen door.  He came back out just about the time we got even with his truck and we chatted him up.  Turned out to be the founder’s grandson.  Had a great chat about the history of the place and the family.  Told him outside of Tampa and Miami there wasn’t a better place.

Alf, I know you visit Amelia Island from time to time...have you tried the Cuban joints there? I think one is called Hola! Cuban Cafe and the other is 1928 Cuban Bistro.

Have not tried those. Hesitant I guess.  Sliders is our main place on AI but we try to eat differentl places every night.  Not being campers we rent a quiet condo mid island.  South of th Ritz.
