ABC Touts Rabid Anti-Gun Group's Statistics

"Good Morning America" correspondent Neal Karlinsky on Thursday passed off the statistics of a liberal, rabidly pro-gun control group during a story on the 2008 election and firearms. Reporting live from Wyoming, he talked to a family who owns a number of weapons and asserted, "Yet time and time again, statistics show that firearm death rates are significantly higher in places with relaxed gun laws."

In very small font, an onscreen graphic cited his source as the Violence Policy Center (VPF). Karlinsky failed to mention that this group's web site describes itself as "the most aggressive group in the gun control movement"

The only thing they have been able to determine about having a gun in the home, is... you are more likly to kill yourself with it...   Its not that the gun makes you kill yourself, its just that most succide attempts are actually crys for attention and often fail...that does not happen very often when you put a gun in your mouth.

Well,  the suicide rates don't drop in countries that have banned guns. They find other ways to kill themselves.  And Japan, with virtually no guns,a has a higher suicide rate per capita than the US, despite our having those guns in our homes.

it is also a fallacy that potential suicides don't talk about it before trying to kill themselves. The sad truth is people  literally ignore their saying such things, or dismiss it as idle venting. 

My degree was in psych, and I've come to the conclusion that some people really, really, really don't want to be here. And you won't stop them leaving, either. More in some societies than others.

There are plenty of ways to kill yourself... most of which are very easy to do.  tylenol for example is extremely deadly if you over dose it.   You swallow awhole bottle there is nothing they can do to save you.

Fat man is right a previous thread dealt with that, I believe the numbers were for '05 but America with relitively easy access to guns and a population of 300 million had 30,000 suicides, the same year, Japan with 150 million people and NO guns had 33,000 suicides, mostly with some kind of home made gas. (Hydrogen something, I don't feel like going back to look for the thread. You can if you want to )

This is a true statement, if you are looking, for example, at the US and China. And if one does not count the number of firearms deaths inflicted BY government imposing it's will on the unarmed populace.

Just as lethal to jump off a 20 story building as it is to put a gun in your mouth....... but I dont know from experience
