MGW or Maryland Gun Works
« on: November 15, 2008, 08:15:58 AM »
Okay, I'm easy to confuse.

Got an XD-9.  (Shoots really nice)  Got some fiber optic sights.  Then I discover that of all the guns in the world the XD has the reputation for being the hardest to change the sights.  Okay, Okay.   Not that I wouldn't have bought it anyway.

So, reading on the XD forum a company called MGW makes sight tools.  At Top Gun Supply they're referred to as MGW and on MidwayUSA's site they are called Maryland Gun Works.    Looking them up on-line, they're located in Augusta, GA.

Are these one and the same?
Any other dealers for their tools?
Any body else makes a less expensive tool for front sight removal?

Geee, your full of good news.  I've had an XD9 for about a year and planning on replacing sight as well.  Love to play with tools, but I hate having a drawer full of special tools.  Have to look at those, and maybe it's worth a trip to the gunsmith instead.

(not totally lazy here....doing research, just hoping others had found answers already)

Just FYI, the MGW tool is ~$100.   I found universal ones, but they're ~$450-$550.

Found a place on-line that will rent you the MGW tool for $30 for 20days shipping included.

I have an old generic drift tool and a number of pads for holding receivers/slides in a vise.    Since I only need this once I may try to jury rig something.......however there are lots of warnings out there about how the XD original sights are really hard to remove.

MGW is indeed Maryland GunWorks in Georgia. Brownells sells the MGW tool for the XD for $129.95. Gil Hebard Guns sells them too but I don't have a recent catalog.

As the name suggests, Lou Camillo started his gunsmithing business in Maryland.  The name didn't make as much sense after he moved to Georgia.

You've got to be shatting me Pyle? A $100 for a TOOL to change the front sight? Every other combat pistol you can basically do it with what you should have in your tool box. That's HK level arrogance, ours are the best, who would want to change them? And even there, they ain't that hard to change. For a $100 I should be able to get a nice front sight. Sell that thing. If its not up to snuff and you're in it for $100 to change the sight, plus the cost of the sight, plus the hassel, its just not worth it for a standard SD gun. Just my .02. :P

PS If you do decide to go ahead, it seems a smith would be worth looking at. That way you're not out a hundred bucks for a tool you'll use once, and the job will be done right.

Wow a 4 year old thread suddenly comes to life.

Interesting PPC4Ever.  Is there much PPC interest anymore?

FQ:  Actually most drift sights (which includes many of the brands of semi-autos) requires a tool.    I decided on the universal tool.  That was 4 years ago and 3 XDs plus 3 Glocks later.  Going with the universal tool was a good choice for me as I've used it multiple times on mine and on friends' guns.

FQ, The XD series of pistols are made in Croatia for Springfield Armory, HK has nothing to do with it.

Its known as a metaphor Tom, an ironic comparison if you will, a literary device. Check it out.
