Help with replacing the handguard on a Norinco SKS
« on: November 21, 2008, 03:18:32 PM »
Ok, instructions are to remove the pin from the rear bracket, applying force to the smaller end of the tapered pin. Well, my Chinese comrades have mad eit a little difficult to judge, what with their precision filing job. Smaller end looks to be the right side if you hold the guard like it was still installed. Is this correct?

TIA

Norinco must have changed the design on your SKS. There should just be a latch that flips up to release the rear of the handguard. Sorry I can't help any more.

There is , jf. Once I release the handguard assembly on the handguard itself are two brackets on the ends holding the gas tube and handguard together. The bracket on the back has a tapered pin running through a lug holding the gas tube.  My question is which end of the pin is smallest so's I can beat the snot out of it with a punch to release the actual tube and plastic handguard. I've a new black tinny rail guard to install, and I need the brackets off the old one.  ;D

I believe you want to drive it right to left. You will probably wind up breaking the wood hand guard , everyone else I know who's tried it has.

I got ya now. I thought you were just replacing the handgaurd with another one and not taking it apart. It's an assembly that's not suppossed to come apart. The exploded view doesn't even show the handguard parts, just the whole thing. I did some searching online and most of the exploded views don't even mention the handguard ferrule or pin. I found instructions that said you need a 1/16" punch. So go ahead and beat the snot out of it, and good luck.

thanks guys. Right to left it was, I used my Wheeler Universal Bench block, pinned the guard in and punched like mad. It came out eventually, didn't break the old guard.  Pin was greased, too. Now for the new stuff... from:

Heh. Should I buy that 700 sumfink dollar Aimpoint to stick on this $67.50 rifle? Lol, yes , that's what I bought it for in 1994 - it was two for $135.00 at my local shooting range/gunshop. In NJ, no less.  :o
