Gun rights could stand more limitations

Today’s headline may indeed be tomorrow’s distant memory, but the accidental shooting death last month of 8-year-old Christopher Bizilj was a story that should not be easily forgotten.

Bizilj was the Ashford, Conn. youngster who died as a result of a “machine gun shoot” held at a Western Mass. gun club.

He died after the Micro Uzi machine gun he fired at the Westfield Sportsman’s Club recoiled backwards and shot him once in the jaw.

How any sane adult, be they gun enthusiast or recreational hunter, could be a party to such a bizarre event is itself inexplicable.

Immediately after the tragic accident, John Rosenthal, founder of a non-profit called Stop Handgun Violence (but also a gun owner himself), said that a loophole in the federal assault weapons ban needed to be plugged, so that a specific age limit for handling such a weapon is on the books.

State Rep. Michael Costello of Newburyport said he would draft a bill banning anyone under 21 from legally firing an automatic weapon.

And that begs another question: Why in the world is anyone of any age without formal, military training allowed to shoot a machine gun at an outside range?

I know, I know. It’s our Second Amendment right to bear arms and protect ourselves and our property (”The British are coming, the British are coming!”), and God bless the National Rifle Association for going that extra mile to ensure our freedom to amass a personal arsenal and fire at will.

With apologies to the late Charlton Heston, I just don’t get it.

If I could submit a bill this January it would be one restricting anyone from buying an assault weapon unless first undergoing a special training course, something that in a perfect world the NRA would stand behind.

...if some guy with a single-shot rifle can make a deadly mistake, then likewise very few people among the general population should have the liberty of shooting off a machine gun.

And whats your answer to that question?

Oh yeah, I don't have a prob with people owning machine guns.  I've shot every thing from a american 180 to a ma duce.

I don't think they are fun to shoot, even less when your buying the ammo and loading the mags.

They also have no real role in the civilan world.( other then people that think its fun to shoot them)

Its the Zombies! For those that go through the ass probing regulations and costs of getting a "machine gun" permit process ALREADY in place,... Good Grief this is America!

Last time I checked anyway,... maybe some would prefer Europe version 2.0
I hear England has some gun laws that this gov't wants to model itself after,... kinda makes the American Revolution worthless won't it?
Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.

"A well armed militia" is no longer feasible with muskets.

I'll give you an answer TAB. There is no compromise on civil rights. As long as the 1st amendment is considered to allow Flag desecration, then no one has any legal grounds to infringe on my exercise of the second amendment.
Now go back to your bridge before the Billy goats get you.

He was an "Officer" in the Coast Guard, Probably an Ensign or Lt. JG as he "Commanded" a big   (11 Meter) Zodiac.
We all know about Ensigns and Lt's JG.
Question, who is the most dangerous man afloat ? Ans. A Lt. JG with a compass.  ;D
