Veterans Saluting the Flag

Not sure why this is a big deal to me, but after standing at Attention to Salute the Flag, placing my hand over my heart seemed like I was Standing Down.


WASHINGTON - Veterans and servicemembers not in uniform can now render the military-style hand salute during the playing of the national anthem, thanks to changes in federal law that took effect last month.

"The military salute is a unique gesture of respect that marks those who have served in our nation's armed forces," said Dr. James B. Peake, secretary of Veterans Affairs. "This provision allows the application of that honor in all events involving our nation's flag."

The new provision improves upon a little known change in federal law last year that authorized veterans to render the military-style hand salute during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag, but it did not address salutes during the national anthem. Last year's provision also applied to servicemembers while not in uniform.

I agree, always felt strange to me as well.  It was like trying to teach an old dog new tricks.

This is a good thing as it will also be a way to 'recognize' the ones of us in the 'club'.

Speaking for myself, it always felt disrespectful to not salute the flag. Now keep in mind that I am not a veteran. I ALWAYS put my hand over my heart, and demand that my family does as well. I realize that I am not a vet and therefore I haven't earned the right but, I do feel  an almost overwhelming urge to salute the flag during the National Anthem. I don't, but I sure feel the urge and I can get testy to those who do not place their hand over their heart, family or not.

It always felt awkward with the hand on the heart instead of saluting...like something was missing.  I to like being able to recognize other members of the Band of Brothers (and Sisters!).

I'm glad to know I can salute the flag and the anthem again. I didn't think I'd miss it until I found out I couldn't do it.
