Welcome Phil,
Holy Caca!!!!!!!!!
You need to move to Paradise.
In New Mexico, paint ball, BB and pellet guns are not restricted in any way.
For rifles, meet age requirements, pass the instant background check, pay your money and take it.
For pistols, not sure if have the 5 day waiting period or same as rifles.

AIRSOFT TOO! That's beyond stupid IMO. Is that law supposed to save lives, like other gun control laws are supposed to? A rubber band can leave a bigger welt than an airsoft pistol. Maybe they'll be licensed too.  ::)  The nanny government has to protect everyone from themselves.
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. Letter to Alexander Hamilton, Friday, May 02, 1783

yep

however we do what we can to keep what we have

having a few more issues though  with  a few Cals   ( here in SA specifically )
Quote
SSAA (SA) PRESIDENT'S REPORT ON MEETING WITH SA POLICE ON LARGE CALIBRE FIREARMS.
On Friday 19th February I, and other members of the state executive, attended a meeting  with officials of the Firearms Branch. The purpose of this meeting was to try and ascertain the full story about what is happening in South Australia with large calibre firearms. There were five Firearms Branch officers present.
In answer to my first question about large calibre firearms Chief Inspector Langmead informed us that there is not a blanket ban on these types of firearms, rather that now anyone wanting to keep one or apply for a Permit to Acquire would have to justify it proving that they have a “Genuine need/Reason” for owning firearms of those calibres. Chief Inspector Langmead told us of his reservations about the size of the game we can hunt in South Australia and expressed his concerns about clubs allowing use of these large calibre firearms on club grounds.
When asked about compensation for the people who legally owned this style of firearm he responded with “there is no provision in the firearms act for compensation”, he then informed us that he is willing to allow the firearms to be sold interstate or overseas so that the owner can recover some of their money.
Chief Inspector Langmead also stated that if the owners were willing to have the firearms rebarelled or rechambered to a calibre that is not “on the list” then that would be acceptable.
He informed us that 2 out of the 3 seized rifles had been given to a dealer for sale interstate. We questioned them on what would a “genuine Need/Reason” be. The short answer is that it will be very hard to prove genuine need, he will not accept hunting interstate as a genuine need and stated that he could not endorse the use of a rifle outside his jurisdiction.
Whilst we were there we submitted a proposal for use of large calibre guns at Para. They seemed reasonably amicable about it but only time will tell.

so  what are we talking about

50 BMG
460 Steyr
408 Cheytac
375 Cheytac
416 Barrett
338 Lapua Magnum
FN FiveSeveN ( not that I know of any in Aust)

gets better though
It has been rumoured that the so called “Technical Expert” advising The SA Police is a member of the SSAA, is on a personal crusade to put a stop to these military cartridges and is apart of the SSAA hunting and conservation group. It is also rumoured that said “technical expert” owns a 338 Winchester. It is a bit scary when we have people in our own ranks trying to restrict law abiding citizens from own certain cartridges whilst they feel it is perfectly acceptable to own something close to the 338 Lap Mag.

Okay, you guys all need to move to Wyoming! Let me give you the reality of gun ownership here. (And I am not embellishing) If you want a gun, (rifle or pistol) you go to any number of stores, and get one. 18yo for rifle, 21 for handgun, and pass an instant background check. (and since I have a CCW, I'm exempt from that too)

That's it. And the last time I bought a rifle, the county sheriff was standing right next to me at the counter questioning the evil black rifle I bought. He looked me dead in the eye and said "you know you should consider the 6.8, the 5.56 doesn't have near the knockdown power on the meth heads." He then proceeded to tell me the advantages of using a jacketed hollowpoint versus FMJ to avoid overpenetration inside of buildings!

We have a LE community here that encourages us to carry! They understand that it makes their job easier! And if you look at the crime rate (and you have to look at it per capita) They are right!

I am a member of my nation's chosen soldiery.
God grant that I may not be found wanting,
that I will not fail this sacred trust.

Texas is like that too. Walk in, pick and pay for the gun, pass background check (Though I've seen people get delayed a few times. once or twice because they were born overseas.), which with my TX Concealed Handgun License, I'm exempt from, and take 'er home!

As it should be. I have zero problem with the instant background check. I don't want someone with four felony convictions buying a gun. Beyond that, damned if I should have to explain to a cop why I "need" anything. "Because I'm a free man with a clean record and I want it", should be good enough. Probably best if you don't express that opinion, politically speaking, when meeting with LEOs. But maybe invite one of us down to give the American view and all of a sudden anything y'all ask for will seem sweetness and light. ;D "Can't buy it if you're hunting interstate, but maybe I'll let you sell it"? MY ASS! Take it free, bullets gratis. I'm not a Tom "rope rant" guy, but damn that frosts me. >:(
