How Many Here Are CMP Members?

Many of us have reminded others that the Second Amendment has nothing to do with hunting and sporting other than they use the same tools.  In this time of possible battles over the Second Amendment I was wondering how many are members of the organization that was created by an act of Congress http://www.odcmp.com/services/programs/AnnualReportHistory&Mission.pdf.

What is different in our Nation and World today that would prove we don't need the same level of preparedness? 

* As you answer the poll you will note the no answer tied to a local club.  I know that you do not need to belong to a CMP club to belong, but it is nice to be able to participate in a club than to be a lonely member.

So question.   How does one become a "member"?    I don't see anything on the web site about "joining".   I, probably erroneously, thought you had to be a member of a CMP club and shoot in at least one match.

I know there used to be a way to be a member without joining a club.  However, with most CMP clubs you get membership both in the club and CMP together.  Go to www.odcmp.com and poke around.  I haven't looked for membership for a while, but they do have clubs listed as well ... or at least they used to.

You don't really join the CMP. You qualify for purchases etc. There are basically three things you need for qualification. Proof of US citizenship and age (like a passport), proof of marksmanship activity (a long list is on the link below- includes a CCW or military service), and club membership (they have a list on the site but NRA state organizations count. So no excuse not to have that one taken care of.). The following link spells it all out. If you want to purchase firearms from them, once you have qualified you also fill out a long term 4473 that lasts for 3 years. You then can order and receive firearms thru Fedex direct to your door.

If I understand you and the site correctly it is membership with a CMP Club plus meeting the safety requirements that qualifies you for full benefits of purchase and activity with CMP.

M58 this is from the CMP website. It is really simplier than it looks. For each of the specifications below you make photocopies of the documentation, fill out the form and send it in. If you have any questions don't hesitate just calling them up. The forms are on their website.

Eligibilty Requirements for Purchase  
By law, the CMP can sell surplus military firearms, ammunition, parts and other items only to members of CMP affiliated clubs who are also U.S. citizens, over 18 years of age and who are legally eligible to purchase a firearm.   
 
Proof of U.S. Citizenship:
You must provide a copy of a U.S. birth certificate, passport, proof of naturalization, or any official government document that shows birth in the U.S. or states citizenship as U.S.

Proof of Age:
You must provide proof of age. Usually proof of citizenship also provides proof of age. In those cases where it may not, a driver’s license is sufficient.

Membership in CMP Affiliated Organization:
You must provide a copy of your current membership card or other proof of membership. This requirement cannot be waived. The CMP currently has over 2,000 affiliated organizations located in many parts of the country.

Membership in many of these organizations costs $25.00 or less and can be accomplished online. A listing of affiliated organizations can be found by clicking on our Club Search web page at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/clubSearch.cgi. If you have any difficulty in locating a club, please contact the CMP at 256-835-8455 or by emailing CMP Customer Service. We will find one for you. In addition to shooting clubs, the CMP also has several special affiliates. Membership in these organizations satisfies our requirement for purchase. These special affiliates include: Congressionally chartered veterans' organizations such as the VFW, AL, DAV, MCL, etc. U.S. Military services (active or reserves), National Guard, to include retirees. Professional 501(c)3 law enforcement organizations and associations such as the FOP, NAPO, NSA, etc.

Note: Club membership IS required for purchase of rifles, parts, and ammunition.

Club membership is NOT required for instructional publications or videos or CMP memorabilia.

Marksmanship or other Firearms Related Activity:
You must provide proof of participation in a marksmanship related activity or otherwise show familiarity with the safe handling of firearms and range procedures. Your marksmanship related activity does not have to be with highpower rifles; it can be with smallbore rifles, pistols, air guns or shotguns. Proof of marksmanship participation can be provided by documenting any of the following:

- Current or past military service.
- Current or past law enforcement service
- Participation in a rifle, pistol, air gun or shotgun competition (provide copy of results bulletin).
- Completion of a marksmanship clinic that included live fire training (provide a copy of the certificate of completion or a statement from the instructor).
- Distinguished, Instructor, or Coach status.
- Concealed Carry License.
- Firearms Owner Identification Cards that included live fire training.
- FFL or C&R license.
- Completion of a Hunter Safety Course that included live fire training.
- Certification from range or club official or law enforcement officer witnessing shooting activity. A form for use in completing and certifying your range firing can be downloaded from the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/forms/marksmanship.pdf

No proof of marksmanship required if over age 60. proof of club membership and citizenship required for all ages.
NOTE: Proof of marksmanship activity is not required for purchase of ammunition, parts, publications or memorabilia.

Thanks guys, I went there found the requirements, and my home club is on the list. All I have to do is fill out the paper work. SWEET ,

I shot the CMP matches back in the 90's, U.S. Service rifle. Would like to go at it again, although getting up from the sitting position is gonna suck.

Not that it helps with the girth and bulk, but I did receive some advice that really helped a lot ... Suspenders!  Wear suspenders and unbutton and unzip the pants.  Amazing how it helped both kneeling and sitting.
