I recently bought a Para "Big Hawg" .45 at a local sporting goods store...the kind that offers only what they stock. Therefore, most of their pistols lack night sights. Pleased at first with this 1911 high-capacity model, I decided to return the slide to Para for factory, night-sight installation. Personnel I've encountered are pleasant and helpful, and I've had no problem in that respect.
After completion of the work, I noticed the sides of the rear blade notch were not parallel...they leaned inward at the top of the notch! This gave a "pinched" effect to the sight picture, and really surprised me. Furthermore, I could see the Left side of the notch leaned in at a greater angle then the Right side...whoa! Studying the stock, white-dot sights they'd removed, I noticed the notch sides also leaned inward at the top...although at equal angles!
Returning to the local gun store, I asked to see another Big Hawg from the showcase. The rear sight blade exhibited the same "problem" as the one I bought. This pointed to a much larger problem somewhere in production, it seemed to me.
Talking with a friendly Para gunsmith, I'd come to know via e-mails, I had him look at several other available sights at his work location in Seviersville, TN. Every sight he studied had the exact same problem...blade notch pinched at the top! We are working now on a solution...either finding a suitable, factory-available night sight, or removing the paid-for sights, issuing a refund and shipping my slide back without sights.
Has anyone had any such experience with Para quality control? These sights are factory-cast, hollow inside, with Tritium installation outsourced. They're fixed in the dovetail, and are drift-adjustable.
In case Para cannot supply a suitable sight, does anyone have a suggestion as to someone who does? Heinie does NOT...I've had them install night sights on my Glock and XD(M), while all this has been going on. Novak "may," but I'm not sure yet. I don't like XS sights, with the wide vee or dish in the blade.
