Glock 17 versus Steyr M-9
« on: July 02, 2007, 07:52:55 PM »
I am planning in the near future to purchase another 9mm handgun and have settled on either the Glock 17 or the Steyr M-9.  I like the fact that the Glock has a great survival record of being able to take tons of abuse and keep on working.  I also like the fact that Glock has been around for years and there are tons of parts out there to repair them should you have a problem.  I like the fact that the Steyr because it has a manual safety and recoil is almost nil. If The only problem I see with the Steyr is that should they cease production parts could be hard to come by.

My question for the forum is which one of these handguns would you choose and why?

I know very little about the Steyr, but here's what reaches out and grabs me about the glocks.

$16 dollar high cap mags.

Everyone makes holsters and mag pouches for them. Not as many for the steyr.

You can't kill a glock

Lots of glock armorers out there.

Ive been shooting the crap out of a pair of 9mm glocks for the better part of two years and have experienced ZERO malfunctions of any sort.

9MM,

Here is a review I just found.  Have you thought about the sight picture?  Seems strange to me.

The front sight sits on top of the rear sight creating a triangle/ pyramid. Suppose to be very intuitive.    ???

What should really be seen by everyone is the cybershooter site mentioned above: it is for DEACTIVATED  gun collectors as found in the UK.  You can own a gun (with the proper paperwork) so long as it is welded into a blob.  It might still be illegal to use it as a club for self defense in your own home, as the Brit government takes a dim view of such offensive defensive behavior.
If you would join the tiny percentage of gunowners who actually do work to save the rights of the rest, your help will be appreciated.  Don't sit on your hi caps waiting for the next election; write and phone your representatives.  If you're not a member of the NRA, you're probably not reading this anyway.

I have fired the M-9.  Shoots fine, nice grip, totally reliable; weird sight picture that would probably be fine if that was all you ever used; more switches and buttons than a Japanese toilet.
I own Several M1 Garands, but I don't think much of a self defense pistol safety that requires you to put your finger into the trigger guard for operation.  There could be an upside if someone gets the gun away from you and that safety is still engaged, but that is a very iffy advantage, as well as a reason to revisit Michaels information on small backup pistols.

Just in case you buy one, some leather holsters made for Glock 30 seem to fit the M9 very well.

I'll go with Lawrence on this one, Glocks are proven, relatively inexpensive, accessories are very reasonable,
I'm a Glock armorer, and that's kind of like being the Maytag repairman. The reason to chose a Steyr, is possibly grip angle or fit to your hand, trigger pull or feel. Possibly accuracy, but you never know until you purchase and shoot. Steyr has a great reputation, but? Mainly with long guns. If I remember correctly, BMW bought the company and will phase out firearms to build more cars and motorcycles. Not anti gun, just pro profit on what they're good at. Of course if you found a steyr for 300.00 bucks, I'd probably have to have one.

My opinion of the 2 is this......... there has, as far as I can find on the net, no other pistol in History which has gone a documented 1,000,000 rounds. NONE! And that would alone be enough but the original Glock 17 which came into the USA for its purpose of testing, then torture-testing, freezing, mud tests, drop test from building, then choppers, underwater, sand, sub 32 degrees tests, sub 0 degrees tests and ect. ect......... all while only parts being changed were springs and mags with reg. cleaning and oiling. That would seem almost impossible, RIGHT.  Welll after all of testing and intentional abuse that same G17 didnt have just 1,000,000 rounds documented though it, no , they had to hit the TWO FRICKING MILLION ROUNDS MARK !!!!!!!  Yup I said 2mil, no typo, not bosting, no bragging. Ok I may of fibbed a little on the bragging. The gun companies dont talk about it cause the plan cost of it is retarded to think about. Just think of Smith, Spingfield, HK or anyothers try and either match or beat that.   8)

But that sighting system seems real...........

Suppose to be very intuitive.    Huh

I agree with the  ??? part, think I have a better time frame of mastering the FIST FIRE system.

But again its only IMHO.
