I would say go with the lightest bullet in your reloading manual. That way you generate the power required to cycle the action without generating as much recoil. BUT, stick to the recipe, as you know under power loads can cause problems to.

When looking at the lightest bullet and lightest load, also look at which load uses the fastest burning powder. It sounds backwards, at least to me, but the fastest burning powder gives less felt recoil while still cycling the gun.

Look for a 152 or so LSW and load with WST...start at 4 gr and see if that functions the slide. Real mouse farts.
Stay safe,

I was 12 and my sister was 9 when we started shooting my dad's Colt LW Commander with .45 hardball, I really don't think you need to go for a lighter load. The key is making sure they practice getting a good two handed grip and making sure they know that it will kick, but don't scare the beegesus out of them. Load 1 round each time for safety and you should be good to go. Heck me and my sister loved it back then.

I don't reload so I let some kids shoot my .45 with factory target loads and they had fun with it.
The ME is about equal to a .38 Special +P. If you want something less you need to load your own.

It has been years since I made any, and I can't find my notes. I believe it was around 160gr lead bullet with 3.5 to 4 grains of Bullseye. It was slow enough that I could almost see the action cycle, and I could hear it most of the time.
