The Garand Lives On ! Bush 41
« on: January 10, 2009, 03:34:41 PM »
I was watching this morning the commissioning of the last Nimitz class carrier the George H. W. Bush. The old man was there with son 43 plus the Pentagons upper echelon. Was touching to watch the old man. It was very moving actually. Well they come to the part where they parade the colors. And guess what rifles the sailors had? Ok....I am waiting............

GARANDS !!!

I usually see active military in parades or ceremonies carrying M14's. I've even seen M16's. But here they went back to Garands. I suspect that it may have been one of those little military details someone thought of since the old man is the last of the WWII Presidents. Clearly the fine lines of a Garand just out class any other weapon !!!

They also did a fly over with F18 Hornets.....followed by a Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bomber. That is what the old man flew in during the war and got shot out from under him in the Pacific. (Also since Northrop Grumman built the ship it may have been easier for them to dig up an Avenger !)

Many units use the Garand for Drill work, check out video of the USMC silent drill team sometime. I suspect it is because it balances well and does not have a magazine protruding from the bottom to get in the way when they flip them around and toss them back and forth.

Not all use the M1 though. Here is the Naval Academy drill team. They use the M14.

Here is the Navy drill team with '03's

But neither here nor there. This was a parade of colors only on board ship. It was a nice touch for 41.

Either way the Garand M1 rotating bolt in any form on any gun by any manufacturer is the greatest semi-auto action ever made.  Ever.

Ran out late this afternoon to catch a showing of Gran Torino. It was not a Dirty Harry. I thought it really was a gran finale to the macho characters Eastwood has played. He is 78 years old and shows it. Story of down to earth, working folk. Not wanting to be screwed with and not doing the same to others. Looking at the next generation with some mystery but also some hope. It is not a shoot em up. But it is a gritty story of an old guy and young different kids that touches the heart. If you are offended by foul, abusive language and ethnic slurs then this ain't your movie. I recommend it.

Oh and he does carry a 1911 !!!

Tab I watched that kid and couldn't believe how he was handling that rifle! AND I was dammed annoyned that he had that High School athlete body with not an extra ounce of fat. Hey I used to be wiry too (like 40 years ago and 50 lbs lighter!). God bless him.
