Mobile Emergency Numbers
« on: January 14, 2009, 11:44:17 AM »
After receiving an email saying to call *77 or #77 for all mobile highway emergencies, I discovered it is only the case in several states.
The email was about a young woman being followed by an unmarked car with flashing red lights. The email said when in an unsure situation, call *77 to reach the Highway Patrol. This info is misleading to a great extent.

Here is a map of the proper numbers to call by state:

I once called *HP while traveling down the interstate to report a group of motorcycles who were clogging up traffic so that the other members of their group could take turns drag racing.....

.... When I dialed it, I was connected to the dispatch for the local PD for the county that I was in.... They told me to hang up and dial *HP  ;D

Yeah, it said something to the effect on one website that it was a 'crapshoot' in some states as to where the call might be routed.

I don't know how many times I got an email saying to dial *77 to get the highway patrol. If you check at Snopes.com you also get the link in the OP. It looks like *77 only works in a few states but 911 works in the majority of all states. The weekly Snopes newsletter is a great BS detector, and I know about most of these emails with bad information before people even send them to me.

Often if you look on the back of your drivers license there's a number for the highway patrol.  I know that's how it is in Texas, we've got a number for the Department of Public Safety.

So take out those wallets.

I started to post the snopes link too, but decided not to.
I don't get as many emails from my friends as I used to because I was the BS detector or spoiler when I would get all those fake emails. I'd reply to everyone with the link to the busted info.
There are a couple of other sites like snopes.
