American Rifleman Magazine: The State of the XD

Almost a decade ago, the Springfield Armory X-Treme Duty pistol started off as a promising, yet obscure, design. It has since grown into one of the largest, most diverse and affordable families of polymer-frame striker-fired pistols. Excellent ergonomics, simple operation and great variety have helped put the XD in the top tier of modern handguns.

Note the link on the side about Springfield's XD custom shop.

The XD has come down in price since the new XDM ($650-$750) has come to market, and now you can make the claim that it is one of the most affordable polymer pistols out there (approx $500). It is definitely a great pistol..... BUT, I have long said that Glock is without a doubt the best value in handguns there is.

Yes, you may not like them.... they may not fit your had right..... you may say they are ugly.... etc, etc. However, their extreme reliability and ruggedness put them on anyone's short list of top choices for personal defense..... and at approx $500 (with just as reliable used models being able to be found at $350-$400) they are a bargain. Every other handgun on my "list of guns I'd trust my life to" starts off at around $600-$700 ..... a solid dependable 1911 can cost you a $1000 and move upwards to $2000+ very quickly. For those prices, on the low end you are talking about a brand new Glock and an extra $200 left over for mags, holsters, and ammo for your new little buddie. And when you look at a $1000 to $1500 1911, you start talking about 2 or 3 Glocks that can be had for that same price.

Bottom line: Glock is a world class personal defense gun at a cant be passed up bargain price.

I read this article last night.  The jury is still out on the XD(M).  The original XD has proven itself a robust pistol that rivals the Glock.  Were anyone to ask me, these are the two pistols I would recommend.  The prices are good (as noted).

At my shooting range they have Glocks that have fired incredible amounts of bullets. Everyone working there likes the XD, but admits that all of the 9 and 40 versions that they've seen have broken down under the kind of demands that a range puts on them. They haven't seen too many problems with the .45s, but say that they haven't been out long enough to tell. I've shot XD's pretty well.

Was out to the range Christmas weekend and put the Son's Gal-friend's new XDM 40 and his (old) XD 45 thru the paces. Really liked the XDM. Run her hot and heavy with assorted loads and was impressed all the way around.
Also liked the changable grip inserts too as the fit turned out just right.

I picked up an XD M in .40 this last Saturday.  Ran a few rounds through it on Sunday, and I like it quite a bit.  I'll take it out for a spin at a local match and let you know what I think.

Yes, I did!  I feel there is going to be a long wait for this possible sub-sub-compact.  I have tried to find out and or have the 3 M's find out when the compact and sub-compact XDM's might/will come out without any luck.  I am not into competing with an XD or M...only interested in a possible new CCW in 9mm.

I know..... I want something the same weight and size of a LCP but in 9x19..... probably only hold 4 or 5 rods... but still would make a nice deep cover gun.

I noticed the caption under the picture of the XDSC (page 42 for those following along), which reads "...The smallest (for now) is the XD Subcompact with a 3" barrel."

Did anyone else find the "for now" part intriguing?

Love to see a comparison with an M+P. I fondled an XD "big" time, but my hand just didn't feel natural at the grip. (lefty doesn't help).

 The M+P I bought did.

Why would they make the Custom XD tang different and change the stipple?

They should just make that a standard feature.

I own 2 Springfield pistols (both 1911's) ;),  and they are truly a quality manufacturer; based on the covers of several Gun Mags, they are pushing hard to get them out there.

The price for an M+P I believe is slightly cheaper.

Just my humble .02 cents.
