My reaction to all this is changing from snickering, sighing and head shaking to a wide eyed awe at the sheer depth of this phenomena.

Do not mistake this awe as a favorable reaction.   I might be awed by a volcanic eruption or a nuclear blast, both of which might do reg ratable damage.  I am awed by the overwhelming force of the event.
