Converted Mini 14
« on: July 13, 2007, 09:25:36 AM »
Got tired of trying to make the Mini accurate, so turned her into a CQB rifle:

Much more fun to just shoot the dern thing and not try for groups.  I can shoot it about as well open sighted as with a scope at distances I can see the target.

Cool gun!

I believe that's the way to go (and I talked about that a little on this week's podcast). Instead of pretending the Mini's a tuned AR target gun and complaining mightily, just pretend it's an American AK-47, which it pretty much is.

Heck, that's exactly what I'm going to do with my old one...

Good job!

Cool looking gun and if ya don't expect it to make cloverleafs at 100 yards it's a good shooter.  Have fun!

That seems to be a "new model." From all indications they're more accurate than the old ones, and all the test reports I've read on them seem to run in the neighborhood of 2 MOA, which is pretty good compared to the old ones. How inaccurate was yours?

Yes, it is a 580 series, and it was not one bit more accurate than any previous Mini I owned, and I think I have had about 3 of them now.  It would do pretty good for about 10 shots at the most, then the shots just fall off the paper.  But, it was minute of pie plate, thats about all it would do.

What are you doing for reliable mags?

I have four Ruger factory 20 round mags.  They are 100% reliable.

I actually mentioned that on the podcast this week...Ruger 20-rounders are 100% reliable (and expensive compared to AR mags). Some people swear by the ProMags (including the Mini-14, but I've had so-so success with them. I just ordered one of the 20-round C.J. mags from Brownells, because I've heard good things about them and C.J.'s has ben making M1A/M14 mags for a while.

I have NEVER seen a 100% reliable 30-round Mini 14 magazine!
