Where can I get some training?
« on: January 28, 2009, 08:29:38 PM »
I own some Handguns and shotguns But do not know how to use them for home defense or ccw.

I want to go to a school and learn the proper techniques, like i see on Best Defense  ;)

Ive searched the web and came up with a few, one is Frontsite. but I read some things that make me question the school.

any help would be great

Thanks

I think knowing where you live can help someone to direct you.  Training is popping up everywhere, it seems, and some classes are held "off campus" by people like Suarez ( http://www.suarezinternationalstore.com/ ).

For instance, I'm only a few miles down the road from USSA outside Tulsa, OK, which has a pretty good training line up...it's at www.usshootingacademy.com   They lists their courses/calendar online.

I'm certain the Masters, Messieurs Janich and Pincus, can provide such training.  They do such a good job of being fair and balanced...I don't really know how to divine where they ply their craft.

It's really hard to say unless we know where you live or what training you've already had.

I'd start with the basics: a pistol class from your local range. If you've already had that and can more or less hit the target, then it's time for a more advanced class.

There are those who love competition, like IDPA or IPSC, but remember that they are a step in a direction, not the end goal. IDPA is cool because you can shoot from a concealed holster at multiple targets with double-taps (all of which most ranges strictly forbid), but it's still not dynamic critical incident training (though it is good to see what dumb mistakes you can make when TIME is the only thing adding pressure to you).

First: Good for you for looking for training. Too many people think that Grampa's back yard lessons or their CCW course have provided enough information and practice to be responsibly armed.

Next:  Let us know where you are and we might be able to be more specific, but there are many great options for defensive firearms courses. The specifc things that you are seeing in the firearms pieces on TBD, of course, are offered through my company, I.C.E. Training and our Regional Representatives: www.icetraining.us is the website and there is a calendar there showing many of the courses offered by our busiest instructors, including me. While you are there, you can check out The Training Log Book in the online store and see a list of all of the contributors (over 30). You can take the fact that they are included in the book as a testament to the value of their training. Naturally, there are many good instructors who are not involved with Combat Focus Shooting or The Training Log Book project as well!

Thank you for the input so far. I live in rural NW Wisconsin, lots of corn fields but no ranges that offer skilled training by quality trainers. I am willing to travel to get quality training both in Handgun and shot gun.
The only training i have is shooting paper targets in a gravel pit.

I would like my journey to take me to the level of the masters i see on TBD

For basics, keep your eye out for the upcoming Appleseed schedules - they are held across the country and having been to one, I can attest they teach you the basics of rifle marksmanship. Check them out here - you should have fun as they wrap the training in Revolutionary War history. Here's the url http://www.appleseedinfo.org/as_schedule.htm. There's one in Lodi in April.

For your location, try the Twin Cities area too for instructors, check out the local (or closest) box sporting goods stores - Gander, Dick's, Bass, Cabela's, or Sportsman's, and get info on instructors there too. Even here in Fargo we have a bunch, they are around.

Good luck, and great post for a 1st go-round. Welcome!

Rob,

I too am looking for additional training above the "better than nothing" yet somewhat scary minimal CCW training in this state. I am willing to travel, but the logistics of traveling with the weapons somewhat limits my options. I have many people here that say they "train" but after one class where they simply run a target down the range 10 feet and say that when they tap you on the shoulder "give the target 2 rounds as quick as you can" does not constitute training in my book.

I am in North Carolina and there are many reciprical agreements with negboring states. I am even willing to do inventive things like ship my weapons to the training center if required.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Weeds,

From NC, you have a lot of options.... In addition to BWTC, you have options in VA, AL, GA, FL and TN all within a day's drive. Many of the top instructors in the world travel through the southeast regularly. We certainly have several CFS courses a year within your range.
Off the top of my head, Depending on where you are in NC, you might look at:
Firearmz in Georgia
Shootrite in Alabama
Perroni Tactical in Virginia

Take a look at the traveling schedules for various instructors as well.
