How best to support series on Outdoor channel?
« on: January 29, 2009, 10:42:29 PM »
Just got the Outdoor channel just for the Best Defense series. As a life long weapon owner and shooter, this show so far has been invaluable to me as I recently acquired a CCW permit. Far cry from a 10 year old running around with a Colt Match Target Woodsman in a back pocket so long ago.

So, how to insure additional episodes? Another season? Write the Outdoor channel? Use sponsors and let them know about you  heard of them? Any ideas would be appreciated!

I do really enjoy the show Gentlemen!

Dear Weads:

Thank you for your post and your enthusiasm. My personal goal in participating in The Best Defense is to share as much relevent information as possible with our viewers. "Relevant" is a matter of opinion, but is largely defined by you. Please, by all means, post what you like about the show, what you want to see more of, what you haven't seen but want to see, etc.

Posting it here is great because it feeds discussion and is available to everyone. Sending e-mails to the OC is also viable, but doesn't publicly document your thoughts or open them up for comment.

Stay safe,

Mike

You guys are sort of channeling a conversation Marshal and I had yesterday.

For the most part, OUTDOOR CHANNEL is one step removed from the day-to-day comments on the shows. There is the OC community site (http://www.myoutdoorchannel.com/) and, of course, DRTV, which hosts the official sites for THE BEST DEFENSE, SHOOTING GALLERY and COWBOYS. TBD's site is the prototype for how Marshal and I plan to do show sites...we want you to have access to us. We also want to be able to show OC executives how important these shows are to viewers.

Next up is an overhaul of the COWBOYS site as we head toward the new season of COWBOYS starting in July. Of all our projects, COWBOYS is the most tenuous, because it addresses a smaller market than either SG or TBD. However, Marshal and I feel COWBOYS is critical in OC's overall coverage of the wonderful world of shooting, so to speak.

Marshal and I want to set up a mechanism for you to let OC know that you like and appreciate shooting shows...more on that later!

Mike and Michael B,

To Mike, I really enjoy your unarmed segments with Rob. I never want to discharge a weapon at a person unless all other options have been exhausted. The fact that a middle aged person (hey I’m a electrical/electronic/computer guy at work, how intimidating can I be visually? Pleated khakis really do not do it!) can use simple techniques with training to defuse what could escalate into a deadly encounter I find very informative and useful. I really enjoy the fact that you and Rob build on previous episodes.

To Michael B, I did not mean to summarily dismiss the other shows on the Wednesday night lineup. I have the DVR set up to record everything and find the Cowboys show entertaining and informative as well. I grew up around weapons of all descriptions in the mountains of southwest Virginia in a mill town. Turkey shoots and handgun exhibitions in the ball park on the Fourth of July all remind me of the “vibe” your show presents from long ago. Well done!

I just want to try in some way to insure that the shows keep running!

Thanks!

Kelly

OK ... Frost bit, simple mind at work here ...

MB, did you say that you will be setting up a good way to get word to everyone we need to make sure we keep these shows?  I want to make sure that these shows remain both with Outdoor Channel and Dish.  Others have their own suppliers they wish to keep them with, and others have suppliers they wish would start providing coverage.

Do we write letters of thanks or please carry, do we e-mail, or do we log on to their web sites?  I'm looking for the most effective way possible.

I do let sponsors know on their web sites where I have heard about them and thank them for their support.

Howdy Weads,

Thanks for subscribing to the Outdoor Channel and welcome on board on Down Range TV. The same goes for all our members on our site, new and old.

We are all grateful that we have a TV channel to promote the shooting sports, hunting, gun ownership in general and our Second Amendment rights. Wednesday night on the range has also become a weekly highlight for many gun owners and we are all proud to be a part of it.

All of us in charge of DRTV and most important, those involved in the productions of the TV shows we promote have some interesting jobs. But... we are also "attached" to higher goals and motivations besides the professional platform. We are all shooters and have been involved in related activities for more years than we can remember. Michael B and I have been involved in recruiting shooters, as instructors. running local and national organizations and we are still more or less involved in this through our activities. This combination is important for us and an important driving force.

We truly appreciate the fact that Rob and Michael J are on board, taking the time from their crazy schedule to spend some time with the viewers and the members here on Down Range. Their professional background and knowledge combined with the views and opinions from our members have opened up for some interesting follow ups and topics.

As Michael mentioned, we have some plans to move the interactive connection between web and TV to a higher level. Short version is that we want Wednesday night on Outdoor Channel to last "a few days longer" with follow ups and related content on the web. You can see a little glimpse of that now through The Best Defense section here on DRTV and the forum, but we do have some major plans for our two other shows as well along with more Best Defense Interactive content.

Using the web and the shows on the channel, we are trying to establish a hand in hand approach to all types of activities related to responsible gun ownership. And with the help from you and all our friends here on Down Range, by spreading the words not just to the Outdoor Channel, but to friends, co-workers, etc., we will succeed in increasing the numbers of viewers both on the TV screen and the computer screen.

We see Best Defense and other shows on Wednesday night as an important asset to get more people involved and to understand how important our activities and knowledge are to our freedom. A small of part of the picture, yes, but more important than we realize on a daily basis.

And yes, we will set up an effective way for you all to get the word out to the channel, to the sponsors and your friends.

Good reason to go "Direct" to "Dish".
