SBR Procedure Question
« on: February 02, 2009, 06:19:06 AM »
OK...I guess I should know but what's the procedure on getting an SBR?  I want to order one or two new, shorter barrels for my PS-90.  Do I initiate the paperwork or does the dealer initiate it.  I already own the firearm, I just want to purchase the barrel.

Also, in one instance I'll be going with a 10.3" barrel which is SBR all the way, the other, with a 16" barrel leaves the overall weapon length too short forcing an SBR (I think).  Anyone here run through this before, that is, converting an existing firearm to an SBR?

Rastus,

If you already have a registered SBR lower receiver, then you can just call up and purchase the barrel/upper.  Depending on the company, they may want to see a copy of your ATF form, but I've only had one company ever ask me for that.

If you don't have an approved/ engraved SBR lower receiver, then you'll need to get that first along with the tax stamp approval from ATF before you take possession of any short barrel/upper.  Don't be in possession of SBR components without a valid ATF approval ahead of time.  Chances are nothing would ever happen, but it's good peace of mind to do it the right way.

Find out from a dealer if SBRs are even legal in your state. They're not here, but I can get a machingun. Huh?  ???

Thanks Frank, in Oklahoma the SBR's are legal.

And yes, I will have the SBR papered up before I get anything.  I don't want to face an angry ATF under the Obama administration.
