How hard would have been for him to say "We are going to help you by cutting back on special benefits for certain people and quit running your life for your. That way we will save money and be able to allow you and your employer to keep more of the money you earn, and you will be able to not only have more to spend but also be able to improve your life situation." Ooooooops ... that's that damn opressive white attitude of mine that believes that you should be rewarded for busting your ass and that hand outs are for a hand up only.
By the way, there is something to be said for "paying your dues" at places like McDonalds as you gain your education and experience. Even though our Founding Fathers were mostly wealthy men they talked of and advised conservative financial habits. Maybe the Pres. could have said "be thankful you have a job in a place that will teach you responsibility and accountability while you earn your degree toward future success."
