Man accidentally shoots himself at hospital cafe

LAFAYETTE, Colo. (AP) - A man who reached into his pocket to pay for lunch at a hospital cafeteria in Lafayette accidentally shot himself with the gun in his pocket. Police and officials at Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center said it was an unfortunate accident.

Officials said 59-year-old Steve Tapp of Thornton was treated at the hospital and released. No one else was hurt.

Officials said Tapp, who was visiting family at the hospital, shot himself in the right thigh Tuesday. Security guards responded and took the gun.

Tapp faces possible misdemeanor charges of unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, prohibited use of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

The hospital forbids guns, although no sign was posted Tuesday stating the policy.

On the positive side ... He was close to both doctors and attorneys willing to work on commission (I'm sure for a million bucks they will blame someone else)  ;)

If I ever shoot myself accidentally I hope I'm lucky enough to do so in a hospital.  :)

Is this guy an NFL player somewhere?

Pretty dumb.  If you're going to carry in a pocket without a holster, at least make sure it is an empty pocket for Pete's sake.

My biggest problem with a pocket gun is working on putting my other stuff in the weakside pocket.  I didn't realize how much I telegraph "gun" until I got Practical Conceal Carry from the "boss lady."  I'm working on it, but it is slow ... just like a lot of other things I learned!

I bet he put the pistol in the same pocket with his keys.   :(

Keys will get in the trigger guard and press against the trigger as you pull it out.   :o

I ALWAYS use a pocket holster for the J frame that warms my jeans front pocket.   ;)

I do use a pocket holster, and do have a large assortment of keys right next to it, I do check the orientation many times a day to be sure the grip is available, the keys help break up the outline even more. I have withstood a pat down by my trained friends, and passed it. Good advice though, holster beats, raw pocket carry, keeps the grip where you need it for the draw and blends the outline.
