This will do two things:

1. Place a defacto "tax" on owning a firearm by requiring gun owners to incur the cost of carrying the insurance policy.

2. Increase the number of lawsuits filled against gun owners since there will now be $1,000,000 in play that may be sued for.

People would start kicking and screaming if they blatantly try to oust the 2nd amendment, but what they have slowly been trying to do is price us out of the ability to keep and bear arms.

Can you say "Gift from the Dims to to their ambulance chasing trial lawyer buddies?"

I thought you could!

Of course, it would be sad when I am a lawyer because...

the cops can't be above the law, they would have to have it too. And that would kill it!

hmm intresting

the 2 clubs I am a member of  AHN Inc  and SSAA  being a member of either one give me  $10M public liability insurance.  the cost is not that expensive for either club,   the range that I am also a member requiered ALL members to also be in the SSAA ( as they are a SSAA range) and that is for the insurance for the members

And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. The only thing you can’t do is ignore them

All I will say is Obama did promise Hope and Change.

"Change" our Second Amendments.

"Hope" to take away our firearms and ammo. >:(

I can't say that owning a firearm should mandate having the insurance, but personally I immediately purchased an umbrella insurance policy from Geico.  The policy was for $1M and cost $85/year, but at the same time I was able to lower my auto insurance premiums $40/6 months so the policy only net cost me $5/year.  Seemed well worth it.  The umbrella policy isn't a policy specifically about firearms.  It covers all of your actions, whether you accidently ended a life of an outstanding high earning citizen because your lawn mower kicked a rock and hit them just perfectly on their temple, or because you defended your life in your home with a firearm.  The policy only covers legal acts, so a defensive shooting has to go your way in the courts if charges are brought.  On year two I bumped my coverage to $2M for around $35 more/year.  Geico can provide coverage up to $5M, but they won't go over $2M without a review to understand why you'd need so much.  The minimum policy was $1M.

If someone has alternate options I'm interested.  The idea of a shooting club getting a group policy is an interesting one as well.  I'll have to mention that one next time I'm there.

Hobbes, sounds like that's a pretty good buy. I think it's pretty great, because it was your choice to do so. I sure wouldn't want the government mandating that we all purchase it. Aside from the obvious fact that we just don't want a nanny state (California will try to pass something like this eventually), I wonder if some of the great deals would disappear if people had to carry that kind of insurance.
