I joined the army with my job guaranteed as a small arms repairman. Unit armorers brought weapons to me that they couldn't fix. The armorers were mostly clerks with little training on firearms. If you have a choice, make sure you choose the right job.

Go for Small arms repairer, like Jumbo Frank says, unit armorer, (76Y) top out at E - 4 and doesn't do much more than basic maintenance. Sniper is very hard to get into and hardly ANY use in the civilian job market.

When I was in the army you could go from E1 up to E-5 in small arms, 45B. After that if you were promoted to E-6 you had to go into 45K tank turret repair. 45L artillery repair was the same way. Once you got past E-5 you had to switch to 45K and learn a few more jobs. The good news it was all "guns" of one kind or another.
