Schaeffer Cox with the group Second Amendment Task Force is urging everyone to wear their guns during open-carry days this weekend and next. He expects about 500 people to participate.

"There's a social stigma that only cops and robbers have guns," Cox told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. "The truth is everybody is packing but nobody knows it because we keep it concealed."

Fairbanks Police Chief Dan Hoffman doesn't oppose the show of arms.

"There's no law that prohibits a citizen in the state of Alaska from carrying an open, legal firearm," Hoffman said. "It's perfectly legal."

That's one way to get people's attention. There are still some states that allow open carry.  NC has "vague double edged statute allowing it." I lived and carried openly when camping, getting provisions in small towns in the mountains, etc,..

A: In North Carolina there is no State law specifically prohibiting the open carry of firearms. Under the theory that if it isn't specifically prohibited it's not illegal, open carry is possible. There are some glaring exceptions to this. They are:

Private property owners and businesses can post "no guns."
Firearms are strictly prohibited on state-owned property, except rest areas and state lands where hunting is permitted.
Local governments can (and do) enact prohibitions against "display of firearms" in cities and/or specific areas within cities or counties, which means they can't be visible. Under this statute there is absolutely no requirement for the city or county to post notice of the display ban.
Local governments can (and do) enact firearms bans on local government property and in parks and recreational areas.
Any federally-owned property or federally-regulated property like banks and Post Offices is of course a prohibited area.
Much of the Outer Banks is "National Seashore," and firearms are prohibited in those areas.
So in theory that leaves everywhere else in the state - except for one more thing. There is a common-law offense in NC called "going armed to the terror of the people." Basically what this means is that if someone sees you carrying a firearm and calls the police to report "person with a gun," you can be charged with this offense. It's not often used in rural areas, but has been used in populated areas. If you are an out-of-state visitor who is not here lawfully hunting or engaged in some overt firearms-related event such as a competition, it will be hard to talk your way out of it.

So is open carry legal in NC? In theory, yes. In practice, maybe. It seems to us like a very good way to get arrested.

Not a big deal in rural areas and small (I mean small towns), but Charlotte, Raleigh? Your gun is seized, your arrested, even if your squeaky clean you'll have to go to court pay a court cost or fine, even if they dismiss the charges and wait until they want to give you your firearm back.

In my opinion, the right to open carry is covered in the 2A as the law of the land and is being infringed upon by the federal gubmint.
It should be allowed across the land.
However, I would still probably carry concealed the majority of the time even if open carry were allowed by law. I don't want anyone to know what I have (a tactical advantage, IMO) until the time comes to use it (and I hope it never does).

A person may carry a handgun openly upon
his person or unloaded and exposed or locked
up in a vehicle without a license to carry. To
obtain a license to carry, a person must apply to
the selectmen or mayor or chief of police of the
town where he is a resident. The selectmen or
mayor or chief of police shall issue a license to the
applicant authorizing him to carry a handgun if
he is a suitable person to be licensed and has good
reason to fear an injury to his person or property
has any other “proper purpose.” Hunting,
target shooting or self-defense shall be considered
proper purposes. The license shall be valid for all
allowable purposes regardless of the purpose for
which it was originally issued.
The fee for the license is $10.00 for New
Hampshire residents and the license is valid for
not more than four years. The license shall be in
duplicate with one copy held by the licensee and
one copy held by the issuing officer.
The license must be issued within 14 days
application. If the application is denied, the
reasons for the denial must be stated in writing
and delivered to the applicant.

New Mexico is an Opne carry State  and I open carry every time I go out the wife was SO SO about it at first now she is OK with it
