Need advice
« on: February 23, 2009, 05:47:00 AM »
Things are looking up here in Montana, to the point that I am about to buy a new handgun (wife is itchy about no hogleg in the house). However things are not so great that I can afford to buy what I would like (cough*1911*cough) and given that I'm gonna need all the extras I have to keep the price way low. I'm not big on used guns when I don't have the cash to deal with any problems that might crop up later so that is pretty much out.

So, what I need is;
Semi-auto (wife don't like wheelguns)
9mm or better
high capacity (13 plus if possible)
$500 or less WITH, 4+ mags, holster & mag pouches and a limited quantity of ammo (250 rds or better)

I only have 2 candidates so far;
Bersa Thunder ($320 for the 9 or .40 full size or the .45 compact {not sure the wife is up to the compact .45, full size no prob. but compact?})

CZ 99 9mm ($300)

any other ideas, suggestions etc. would be appreciated.

I think you need to reconsider buying used...... remember that most used guns have not seen much action, and the majority of their "use" was probably sitting in a night stand draw........... try to find a gun smith that would take a look at it for ya....... may only cost ya $20

Bersa seems to have a good reputation. Used Glock ?

I was going to say used glock police gun. Years ago they were everywhere, mostly in 9mm.
Now they are harder to find and usually in .40

First off, I don't like Glocks and won't buy one. I don't like XD's either (again, personal preference). I should have said that I would buy used from someone I trust but not sight-unseen, I have had too many used weapons that I had to put money into after I bought it and I can't afford that now. I have hit Crack Broker and Auction Arms but I don't think I'm likely to to find anything good enough at my price point.

I have researched the Bersa (thanks to FerFal and others) and they seem to be very good weapons. In fact I have seen exactly 2 reports of serious malfunctions on the net and both were fixed ASAP by the factory. The CZ (Yugo, not Czech) is good too, it even beat the Glock and CZ-75 in military tests some years ago (Eastern block country, Croatia?). Iraq is issueing them now and Israel used too.

I used to have a 3rd Gen Smith, worked fine until it didn't and repair was expensive. I even considered a S&W Sigma, for about 30 seconds.

As far as a 1911, they are either too expensive for me right now (Para, Kimber, etc.) or too close to the Charles Daly which was a POS that I dumped after about 100 rounds.

Thanks for helping though, and keep it up.
