Under 500 with money to spare for mags.  That would be a CZ 75B...which if you like the 1911 you'll appreciate the CZ.  Or...try an SR9...except for the trigger, it's my favorite....with that recall thing the price of those are still depressed.

Either one very reliable....maybe an FNP9.  I have each of those and like the SR9 for being slim and light, the feel of the CZ (all metal) and compromise with the FNP 9.  If you like a hammer, you got it on the CZ and FNP 9 plus they clean up easier than the SR9.  SR9 beats them on carry due to size and rounded edges.

I'm a big CZ75 fan, and the EAA copies ( witness ) are pretty good too, if you can find a Springfield armory version the P9, you will probably find them in the 350 dollar range and have a superior fit and finish.

Bought a very clean and slightly used EAA (Tangfolio) Witness .40 for right around $300.00. Came in box with 4 mags. Never had an issue with it. Has the Wonderfinish and have seen other for around the same at gun shows,...

Rear sight is like an Alpine ski jump, but can be replaced easily.

The options are out there.

Tough call, wheel guns have less that can go wrong if used, but the deals are out there regardless of type.

My FN9, NIB was less than $450.00.

That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

I've got a Sig 2022 with about 6500 rounds through it and it's reliable as a hammer.
I got the blues as my companion.

How well does it fulfill its role as a gun?

I bought the CZ99 in 40 S&W, $351 shipped from CDNN. The wife and I discussed it and we decided that the .40 would be better in this environment than the 9mm even though it will cost more for bullets. The Bersa was cheaper out the door but the mags are almost double the cost and the CZ can use Sig leather (or so I understand).

for info on the pistol;

I think you made a good choice.  CZ makes good tough guns.  Many are used in USPSA and IDPA competition and the shooters generally love them.
