greatest assault rifles
« on: February 24, 2009, 12:09:44 PM »
I mainly used modern day assault rifles and will probably put up a poll for greatest next generation weapons but this is my list I got from studying the most used modern day assault rifles (a little surprised that I didn't see more chinese assault rifles from what I understand they are quite effective) and I made sure to add american assault rifles even if they are not used that much, I was surprised that the m4 isn't actually used near as much as some other rifles.

M 14 and FAL aren't actually "assault rifles" because so few were select fire.
Most Chinese assault rifles are adaptations of Soviet designs, so are simply classed as AK's

Come on people we all know that the Garand is the greatest, be it in M1 or M14 or M1A.  Just cause the Rooskies cranked out a gillion AK don't make it the greatest.  And I won't even comment on the FN Fal, who ever voted for it. >:( >:( >:(

Neither is the G3 Tom.  I see three different weapon types hear:  Assault Rifles, Battle Rifles, and Assault Guns.  I don't consider the bullpups to be an 'assault rifle'.  You just can't classify the M16 with a Aug or L85

M -1 is a fine rifle, but it is no more an "ASSAULT rifle" than a Rem 700.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_rifle
An assault rifle is a rifle designed for combat, with selective fire (capable of shooting either like a machine gun or one bullet at a time). Assault rifles are the standard infantry weapons in most modern armies, having largely superseded or supplemented battle rifles (which are similar to assault rifles but are larger and more powerful) such as the World War II-era M1 Garand and SVT-40. Examples of assault rifles include the AK-47, the M16 rifle, and the Steyr AUG.

Not real familiar with the G 36 but isn't that the 5.56, if so , then it IS select fire and counts as an assault rifle.

I've always thought that assault rifle was a select fire rifle chambered in a round smaller than 7.62 nato.  Thats your 5.56, 7.62 soviet, and 5.45.  Your battle rifle was any thing select fire or semi in 7.62 nato and up, 30-06 7.62x54.  And your assault guns are those bullpup things.  But if you want to throw bullpups in with assault rifle than I guess it's just personal preference, oh and we can't be friends :'(.  So from what I figure we got alot of guns on here that aren't assault rifles.  So either the guns aren't right or the title isn't right.

I didn't comment on the "intermediate cartridge " aspect because I think the .308 qualifies since it is the same "caliber" but less powerful than the 06 it replaced, so that would make it an "Intermediate cartridge" as well.
