USSA,

Thanks for the clarifications, man.... I did get the impression that you were advocating "lights on, always", so I'm glad for the follow up.

One of the hard parts of looking for general advice that applies to as many people as possible for a TV show is that you end up not being able to cover every angle when things get more complex. No doubt that if we spent a few days in a class together (either side...) that we would find that the vast majority of our stuff is common ground for any given student. I know I certainly found that with all the topics that came up while I was at USSA for the TBD Taping back in September.

Thanks Again.

Rob,

Yeah, I know what you mean.  It's a very tough job to distill a 3 or 5 day course down to 22 minutes.  Concepts and ideas definitely get lost in the translation.

You and Michael are doing an outstanding job with the series.  I'm really hoping my schedule works out better this year.  It would be a great honor to work with both of you next season.

I'll plan on seeing you at the Rangemaster event, yeah?  Maybe we'll find some time to sneak into the shoot-house and compare notes....

Another suggestion about flashlights...

1. Don't forget to put one in the bathroom!

2.  Rechargeable flashlights plugged into wall outlets are a hedge against power outages.

FWIW

PS:  Rob, how is that "First Light" light you were using?  How do you carry it?  Is the pocket clip secure?

I have to admit I have three (3) of these and really just need to un-plug them and throw'em away as throughout the years they've really went down hill.  Maybe they make better one's now, but I doubt it.  I bought mine about 4 or 5 years ago.  Plug'em in and they worked well for a while, but, after time they really seemed prone to degradation...perhaps memory retention from being plugged in all the time??  I've found that the smaller, well placed semi-tactical lights I mentioned earlier work much better and you can put them anywhere.  Checking or changing the batteries every time we switch to or from daylight savings time, etc. should keep them in check and workin' when you need them.

Now where did that extra toilet paper roll go??

~hits tactical light and searches...in the seated position~

Hey, can anyone spare a square??

I've been carrying the first light Tomahawk for about a year now. I really like it. I took it on a 4+ week road trip as my only light in order to get used to the L shape and now I find the tube lights awkward.

The clip on the Tomahawk is ultra-secure... I had to bend it a little to make it "everyday" usefully loose, in fact. It is a little harder to carry conveniently than a tube, so it often ends up in a coat pocket. Personally, I would not be opposed to one with an extra battery and extended handle to go with it so it could be stuck in a jeans pocket with the light end hanging out securely.

They are great lights.

I have a variant of the remote control method for lights and this thread has me rethinking my setup. My home is equipped with X-10 controlled lights. The press of the "all lights on" button on the nightstand lights up the house, internally and externally (about 12 lights total). My alarm also communicates with the system and will execute the "All lights on" command if it's tripped.

I'm beginning to think I need to reevaluate my tactics, any thoughts?

Off topic but I really enjoyed the "how to get shot" scenario last night!

I know every home, every situation, every encounter is different. I live in a two story home. The only way upstairs to our sleeping areas, is a L-shaped set of stairs with a blind corner. If I heard a intruder in my home, I would position myself at the top of the stairs  behind a door opening. "I have cover and it is a very defenseable position." That position overlooks the blind corner of the stairs. I would turn the stairway light on. This would light the blind corner of the stairs. I then would tell the intruder to get out of my home and that I have called 911. If he would not obey my orders too leave, and come up the stairs I think he might have made the worst mistake of his life.

Seeing this episode really got me thinking about flashlights on many different levels.  Clearly my current one is inadequate.  Any recommendations for a flash light, tube type with strobe, variable light and thumb (end cap) switch?  A web search found a dizzying array of options and I am trying to narrow them down with good input.

Thanks
