Your Google Info
« on: February 28, 2009, 10:17:47 PM »
I know this has been the case for a while, but never really thought of some of the 'tactical' implications until today.

You can go to Google and type in your home phone number (area code and seven digits using a space instead of the dash) and it may bring up your name, address, and a link to a map to your home. It does not work with ALL numbers, and if yours is there you can request it be removed. I checked a while back and mine was there and I requested it be removed (it was withing 48 hrs.).

Here's where I got to thinking. I was at the front end alignment shop today dropping off the wife's ride for some work. The guy asked me for my phone number so he could call and let us know when it was ready to be picked up. As I was telling him my home number, I realized there were several people just milling about the place waiting. Any one of them could have overheard me telling him and taken my phone number, googled it, and then (had I not already removed it from the registry) followed the map to my home and cleaned me out at a later date without ever knowing my name to start with.

I know the same info can be found in a phone book if your number is not unlisted, but why take chances?

Windows Live Search does the same thing. The worst part about it IMO is the map to your house. Google Maps is bad enough but Microsoft Virtual Earth / Live Search Maps can zoom in close enough to see the vents on your roof. People can see what's parked in your driveway and if you have a pool, etc., so there's no mistaking which house it is. All they have to do is come by when you're not there and steal everything.

Anyone who calls you paranoid about "big brother" is an idiot.  Technology has gtten way out of hand. (I guess that's another thread topic.)  Yeah, folks in my area have gotten irritated with strange cars rolling through the neighborhoods snapping pictures.  Some of the turds that take pictures for Virtual Earth and others have been ticketed and arrested for trespassing on private roads.

I know Google's STREET VIEW had someone's whole driveway and garage close up too.  >:(

Yup Google Street view / Google Earth has my Neighbors Car and Jeep clearly shown in his driveway with his garage open, you see his motorcycle and ATV's in his garage and where his interior door is from garage to house....

Pegleg, we've ditched our home hard line in place of cell phones and also placed our call numbers on the national do not call registry - we are at least shielded that way from the Google look up like you described.

Try Windows Live Search Maps or Virtual Earth. It may be newer.

IT GETS A LOT SCARIER!!! I typed in my address, and not only did I get the info mentioned, but a lot more. Because an online mag sought to do a story on campaign contributions, and who was giving to whom, there is a listing of which candidate I supported, how much I gave, my occupation and handy dandy maps to my home and office!!!!! This is terrifying. If I lived in Russia I'd be dead. I'm all for the free flow of information, but the fact that an e-zine can so easily cross reference FEC forms and Google Earth scares the crap out of me. Maybe I will go buy that AR, but I'll be doing it from a private seller paying cash. This is also where I apologize to the "conspiracy nuts" I've mocked. -BECAUSE- Just to make it a little scarier, on Lou Dobbs on CNN tonight, a Tn. paper (came in too late to catch the name) published a list of all the ccw holders in the state. Do you own a gun, who did you vote for, where do live and what do you do for a living (complete with map). Maybe that will be two ARs.
