Kansas state Senator looks to make lighters illegal

Yes, I am serious. Get out your ID if you wish to buy a .99 cent Bic.....

http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2009/feb/10/senators-bill-would-make-it-illegal-anyone-under-1/

Kansas state Senator Oletha Faust-Goudeau, (D-Wichita) whose Senate Bill 106 would make it illegal for a retailer to sell cigarette lighters to anyone under 18 and also make it illegal for anyone under 18 to have a lighter.

Why?

Quote
“Too many children have access to cigarette lighters because the lighters are displayed in stores where children can easily see them, reach them, take them or purchase them,” said state Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau, D-Wichita.

Quote
“In our fire prevention efforts, we feel that there is absolutely no reason for any child under the age of 18 to have free access to or possess a cigarette lighter or any open flame device,” said Lt. Mark Chairs of the Wichita Fire Department.

If the bill passes, it will cost the people of Kansas $248,000 in start-up costs to conduct the proposed required inspections.

Maybe they can start marketing small lighter sized GunVaults so smokers can light up and at the same time keep them free from litigation by preventing their 16 year old from having access to their lighters.

ITS FOR THE CHILDREN!

The kids today probably don't know how to use those "strike anywhere" matches anyway,..... ::)

So taking the lighters away makes perfect sense for the nanny state mentality.

Absolutely!

To the best of my knowledge they don't make them anymore (used to work in grocery stores). When we could get them about half of them would be burnt.

Back to lighters, in Hellinois it is already illegal for any one under 18 to buy (but not posses) any smoking material. that includes lighters. Not really enforced though.
