Hey XD, I have several for different purposes, So I'll lay them out and why.

1) My race revolver is an S&W 627 pc 8 shot with a Tasco PDP4 on top, 4 minute dot, Weigand mount. This is mainly for ICORE, AND STEEL PLATE MATCHES.

2) S&W 686 6" same set up. I bought it first and still love it, it's 20 years old and 60,000 + rounds through it.

3) S&W model 10 .38 special, bull barrel with a burris 1x from Gil Hebard  with and 8 minute dot for NRA action shooting.

4) Same as #2 but with a Tasco pro class 30mm pistol scope with a 4 minute dot for hunting.

This only covers the 38/357 w/scopes.

The pistol depends on what you want to do, serious competition? 8 shots is mighty nice.  Informal competition, a 586 or         686 with  6 or 7 shots capacity works well and less expensive. They're all accurate.

Scope, same deal, what size is your target, how far away will you shoot it, how fast do you want to acquire your target?  Under which conditions, bright light - low light etc... Red dots with big fields of view are great for action shooting games, sometimes need a little help in mid day sun. I like traditional scopes for hunting, better shot placement due to superior optics and magnification. My experience hunting has been anything over 3 power has too little field of view, and 2 power is probably better.

If you buy an S&W made in the last about 10 yrs, it is already drilled and tapped from the factory for a scope mount, if unsure, open the cylinder and look at the top strap from underneath, you will see the unused holes.

This looks like a pretty cool do anything setup. But I +1 the 627 but rather a C-more on top w/ 16 MOA dot.

Hey, Tex

I have 2 c mores, and I did mount it on my 627, not love, but also not bad. The really big reticles freak me out,  8 minute is just right. My latest c more is what you describe, on a Glock 34 and I just don't like dots bigger than my plates. My other a 4 minute is mounted on my STI 38 super race gun, I don't mind it at all.  As I'm sure you know, single reflex sights make you practice, if not, you'll present the pistol and say " is this on, I don't see anything " with practice it makes you present the sight to your field of view, and then we work on weak hand presentation.  A good learning curve.

I use a arch type presentation which works great either hand and with any gun. If weakhand is giving you a problem then try bringing the comp to spot on target, then raising the rear of gun while driving it forward, lookin at the top of the lens housing, and watching the dot drop right onto the target. This is another reason i find I am a little slow from the low ready. But not to fear i have dropped almost 2tenth off my 1st shot time from last month. Thats thanks BIGTIME to m25operator's tips. NO JOKE MAN. Thank you. You all can check it out here:

To be real honest though I burned a blister into my trigger-finger from those serrations on the trigger face and all the dry firing i did.

Hey again Tex, If your shooting a wheelie gun, I always smooth and round my triggers, about twice as wide as a single action Colt. I have small hands and like my finger to catch the trigger at the first joint from the tip, for double action work. Me and Jerry Miculek  ( sometimes known as god ) differ on this opinion. Where I curl my finger around the trigger, He puts the pad of the index finger on the trigger and presses straight back.  That takes a lot of finger strength, and I won't debate his success. He also likes wide triggers for this approach.  I'm glad my tips gave you some help. My warnings for reflex sights was mainly for newbies. I've been a range officer for over 20 years, and when you see someone struggling with one, it's sad. When I first tried one I had the same problem, no point of reference, but as I continued, it worked. I came to the conclusion, if you keep practicing with this, it makes your presentation more on the money. And when you start weak hand with it , same thing, but put one in the hands of a newbie, and try not to laugh.

Side note: 2 tenths, WOW,  I was hoping you would do that. As we competitors know, over 5 stages with 4 or 5 runs allowed, that makes a big difference. Possibly 4-5 seconds.
I hope I get to see you shoot sometime.

Now for anyone shooting an 8 shot S&W revolver, I have a tip, I converted my personal gun to a short action, whats this?
because the 8 shot indexes the next cylinder so quickly, I removed the second sear for the double action, and now my trigger and hammer movement are 3/4 of normal travel. Anyone who wants more info on this, start a new thread.

Congrats Texcaliber.

My son and I have those combos.  I have a 454/45 lever and a 45 Redhahk.  He has a 44 mag lever and an S&W 629.

Makes for fun shooting, easy reloading and convenient sidearm and rifle for hunting.

Makes good sense to me. My personal problem was my pistol really shines with 300 grain bullets, neither my Timber Wolf pump or my Puma had long enough ramps to feed them. The Timber Wolf liked 180's but the pistol hated them.
