Commandancy of the Alamo
Bexar, Feby. 24th 1836

To the People of Texas &
all Americans in the world --

Fellow citizens & compatriots -- I am besieged by a
thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna --
I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannon-
ade for 24 hours & have not lost a man -- The enemy
has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the
garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken
-- I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, &
our flag still waves proudly from the walls -- I shall nev-
er surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name
of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the Amer--
ican character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch --
The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no
doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five
days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain
myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never
forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his coun-
    try --
    Victory or Death.
    William Barret Travis
    Lt. Col. Comdt.

P.S. The Lord is on our side -- When the enemy
appeared in sight we had not three bushels of corn --
We have since found in deserted houses 80 or 90 bush-
els & got into the walls 20 or 30 heads of Beeves.
    Travis

Makes me shiver

+1....Them ol' boys had sand back then.......talk about stand and deliver and toe the line.
Don't forget, though, not all of them were from Texas....but all of them were brave.

Could you really see Bill Clinton, or the likes of him, in the same situation?

The Hispanics were the only ones "from" there.
I still think their gun laws suck  ;D

True enough....and I'm not taking sides....but that can be said for the rest of country too.........just replace 'Hispanics' with 'Native Americans'.....

And they moved here too. I like that the always-PC Canadians do refer to them as "First Peoples", not "native". More accurate that way. Must be an accident . . .   ::)

I like to recall one of my favorite quotes, I have heard that it was Patton who said it:

"A good soldier doesn't die for their cause, the make the enemy die for theirs"

Still not accurate as they pushed some one else out , such as the Athabascans. The Hopi refer to "those who were here before".

I said the Hispanics were the only ones "From there" because they were, and still are, primarily of mixed blood, between Spanish and the previous occupants of the area. The vast majority of the purer "Spanish" Mexicans supported the Santa Ana Government which they dominated.

Mexican authority in Texas before the Alamo required that residents become Catholics. The revolt took one of its first forms in Gonzles where the residents refused to surrender their small cannon. The 160 defenders yelled to the Mexicans, "Come and take it". One volley of musket shot sent the Mexicans fleeing.

Travis remarked regarding the Alamo, "it is more important to occupy this Post than I imagined when I last saw you - it is the key to Texas."

Come and take it. I like the sound of it.
