Ammo Availability
« on: March 08, 2009, 05:22:02 AM »
The new administration appears to be a big catalyst for the lack of availability of ammunition, particularly handgun ammo.

I've had a hard time finding what I want at my local gun dealer, online and even WALMART for cripes sake.

I know the fear is that new taxes or policy might infringe our ability to stock up, but what do you think is the real reason for lack of availability?

I'm of the belief or perhaps just hoping that it's just most of us making a mad dash for ammo that has put the suppliers behind and that they're feverishly manufacturing it to fill the void.

I attribute the shortage to three things: Katrina, Obama and the militarization of the Police.

Katrina opened many eyes to the possibility that (Surprise, surprise) you may have to protect yourself if things get bad.

Obama has folks scared that things WILL go bad and one should be ready and one might not be able to acquire the means of protection for much longer.

The PD's are buying ammo for more intensive training, and buying more black guns and such to meet percieved threats from gangs etc.

I'm probably a part of the problem  ;D  I keep a stash of cash (which I depleted a couple weeks ago) for ammo when I find it.  I keep a list of what I'm looking for in my wallet, and if I find some at a reasonable (not even lowest possible anymore) price I dig into the spare cash.  A couple weeks ago it was a thousand rounds each of .40 S&W and 9 mm Luger.  I'm running low on .45 acp, .38 special and .357 magnum.

My biggest disappointment is the lack of availability of reloading stuff.  I'm investing in more ammo and less reloading stuff, because I just can't find much in supplies.

With the AR-10 on the way I'm trying to find more .308, but the ammo guys just look at me cross eyed when I ask where the hell it is.
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.

Last month I was at a gun show and a table opened up a crate of .45 ACP. I was needing rounds so I jumped in line. There were only two guys ahead of me. There were about 20 boxes of American Eagle and the guy in front of me bought every box. I was really pissed at the man for being so greedy but I took it in stride cause of the panic the Obama Administration has set in.

There are times that I feel the ammo manufacturers are holding on to the ammo to see how much money they can make from us like the boneheads at the gas pumps. ;)

Ding Ding Ding..........

Talked to my local gun store owner several times in the past months and he said basically the same thing. I went in around Christmas last year and the shelves were almost bare then. He said then if you can find anything out there buy it now. He told me in December that his ammo distributor told him that in January the MSRP was going up across the board per the manufacturers.
The same box of .270 Win that cost $18 in December now cost $30. I was in there last week and the shelves are still low in stock.

Have Heard a couple of interviews on Tom Gresham with the Remington Rep. (I forget the dates or I would post the link I think it was 1-18 at the shot show)
He said that they are running 3 shifts to TRY to keep up with demand, and if a distributor or who ever called in with a LARGE (1 million rounds) order they could not fill it, He also passed blame for MOST of the price increase to distributors and dealers.

Yeah...I did take what my GS guy said with a grain of salt.
I told him it sounded more like his distributor was pissing down his back and telling him it was raining.
Greedy manufacturers putting it to the middle-man or greedy middle-man putting it to the gun shop owner (who has no choice but to pass it to us in order to eat).......who knows the whole deal?
One group taking advantage of another due to threats, real or perceived.
Only thing I know for sure is the end purchasers are the ones getting ripped either way.
