357 barrels for Sig 229

I have a Sig 229 that I have had for years in 40 cal.  Great gun.

I have been thinking about buying a 357 Sig cal barrel for either my Glock 23 or my Sig 229 as a self defense carry gun.  The Glock is simple as a drop in but I don 't know if the Sig barrel would be a drop in or does it need to be fitted?  I checked the Sig web site and they seem to want the gun back to change barrel calibers. 

Anyone know for sure about the 229 barrel needing fitting and anyone have a feeling about which barrel change would be more reliable and accurate?

Their FAQ section says it's just a barrel swap. A standard Sig factory barrel would just drop right in. I wouldn't send it in unless you wanted an aftermarket (i.e. Bar-sto) barrel custom-fitted. That's at least $100 for just the shipping (Next Day or 2nd Day Air), and then there's the fitting charges.

I'd put the .357 Sig barrel in the Glock. No reason in particular.

The SIG barrel is drop in, did it years ago and no issues. (I too have a P229)
I'll say the .357 SIG is a straight push back as far as the recoil impulse opposed to the back and upward twist of the .40S&W (to me)

I made the change when the U.S. Air Marshal service changed their P229's from .40 to .357 - Three friends are Air Marshals and convinced me to change. I shoot the .40 more than the .357 simply because I'm in a rural area now (- was in Dallas when I changed) the .40 is far more available here.

Just curious as to why you'd want to. I've never been a big fan of the .40, just because I don't see that it'll do any thing a 9mm or .45 won't except cost more for ammo. That said, it seems to be good caliber. What will .357 do that .40 won't without putting a "maybe" mod in your gun?

It's fast as hell and hits up in the 525 ib range at the muzzle...shoots real flat too..

I'd carry it over a 9mm anyday but ammo gets scarce and expensive...

And that is my second point. I always prefer a standard caliber (.270, 12 gauge, 9mm, .357 etc) over the newest acme whackinator 2000 because I know I can walk into any gun shop or wally world and find ammo at about half the price. Ideal performance is nice, but if it comes at the cost of of impossible to find or freakishly expensive ammo, I'm going for good enough; because at least my gun will be loaded.
