Selling fired brass
« on: March 14, 2009, 09:41:51 PM »
I always pick up my shot brass, but I have yet to get around to reloading, and don't want to reload rifle.  Where/how can I sell my used brass?
thanks,

Put up a note at the shooting range.  It'll be sold in no time!  Got any .308, 7.62x54 or x39? ;)

That being said.  Get on Midway and price one of the Lee setups.  You can be loading that stuff in no time, CHEAP, and making better ammo than you'll find in any store while your at it.  Nobody will tell you its not time consuming though!

I have a RCBS setup, and I reloaded .45 colt when I was getting into cowboy shooting.  I just don't like doing it, and with 9mm, at least, it's cheaper to buy new when you consider how much time reloading takes.

How much should I ask for the brass?

MidwayUSA is selling 1,000 class 3 (mixed headstamp, uncleaned) 9 mm luger for $34 (3.4 cents each) plus shipping.

Go down to the post office, pick up one of their flat rate boxes, fill it based on weight (how much does one case weigh = how many in x lbs) and put out an offer of "approximately so many cases counted by weight for x $'s, shipping included.

I have a buddy that does this selling of range brass as well.  He usually charges about 1/2 of what Midway charges for new brass.  Also, uses a postal scale to figure out postage.  Finally he does clean them up real good.

Do you know if your buddy has ever check the flat rate boxes.  I buy bullets out of AZ that way, and it is by far the cheapest way to go.  I get 1,000 155 gr bullets (just over 22 lbs) shipped in for $8.95!  I usually order five or six thousand at a time, and when I get the yellow card in my PO Box I have to behind the counter to pick up the white totes with two boxes in each one  ;D

In the complex world we live in, ammo is soon to be impacted by the Defense Dept edict to destroy their brass and sell it to China. The remanufacturers like Black Hills etc are no longer going to be able to get brass from the DOD. Soooo that just means you and me are going to be paying still higher prices for ammo. Substantially higher.

I wouldn't be worrying about selling your used brass any time soon. Hold onto it. You may need it if you want to be able to shoot in the future.

I was going to suggest locating a scrap dealer, they were paying about $20 for a 5 gallon bucket full of brass. I checked cuz I picked some brqass up from the Appleseed shoot - especially the stuff thrown by the Galils - shame what they do to good bras. Big dent right along the side from the ejector. Had to walk out 50-60 feet from the shooting position to find them.

I've got cases of Berdan primed I was thinking of learning to reload. I know about the primer pockets and all, but I have heard it is not impossible, just tougher to reload. Any ideas?
