Got an itch that needs scratchin'
« on: March 15, 2009, 07:49:00 AM »
Alright, I have a major problem... I need a new gun.   ;)  I've been looking at my local gun shop, GA, and GB trying to get some ideas.  So far, however, I just keep adding to the want list instead of narrowing it down.  Here is my criteria:  I want a handgun chambered in 9mm or an equally inexpensive round.  I was thinking about a new 1911 but .45 ammo prices are pretty steep right now.  I was also seriously considering a Beretta 92FS or M9, since they are pretty much classics.  Are their any real differences between the two?  I'd like to hear some thoughts regarding them from those more experienced than myself.  I already have dedicated defensive pistols, so this one will just be for fun.  Here is a list of the handguns which already reside in my humble collection.  Any suggestions are welcome.  Thanks.

Glock 17
Springfield XD .45
S&W 642
Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter
Browning Buckmark 5.5 Field
S&W M&P .45

Go with the Sig, can't go wrong.

What's that, he didn't include a Sig on the list? Oh, well, that's different . . .

Go with the M&P - nothing like more competition for .45ACP.   ;D

Whatever fits your hand best, the Springfield just didn't work for me, the M&P did.

Swoop,

Since you were thinking about a 1911, I'd suggest you talk to your dealers about the possibility of a 1911 in 9mm.  They are out there, but the "masses" don't buy them so they aren't stocked a lot.

I'm forcing myself to get better with my M&P9 and XD9 (lots of use and practice).  My problem is that I just plain like the feel of the 1911, 2011 and P16 (Para), and the "plastic" fits the hand different.  However, for certain games I need a different tool and need to be able to use it.

I would have a 1911 in 9mm  right now if I had more of a reason for it than the M&P.
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.

I had an early 92 eventually became the FS and then the M9 for the military in the late 80's.  As far as I can tell, they are essentially the same pistol though the M9 may have a metal guide rod vs a polymer rod and the sights may be a little different.  They are fun to shoot, accurate and relatively cheap, about 500 bucks for a new 92FS.  I fired thousands of rounds over a couple years and can't recall any major malfunctions.  Some people complain that they are difficult to clean but I never had that problem.

I had one in each hand down at Cabellas last summer and I couldn't tell the difference, specs are identical.

1911 style in 45 or 9.  A pretty one for special occasions.  What does MB call it?  A BBQ gun  ;D

"No Maam.  If I was expecting trouble, I'd have a rifle."

Big +1.

Around $450 bucks, comes with 3 high cap mags,  very reliable, not to many extras,
Here's a three pistol line up:

M+P great pistol in any caliber.
Tangfolio EAA Witness (basically a CZ) bought used less than $300. (right place, right time)
FN9 fits my hand, solid.

Sig pistols are great, 1911 in 9mm Para's are pricey, but very sweet.

Of course the "G" line. ;)

With the criteria and choices you listed I'd go with the G 17 , although you can't beat the Buck mark for fun.

I'm going to recommend the CZ 75B (go figure  ::)). If you're a 1911 guy...you'll be right at home with it. It just feels right in your hand, and all the controls are in the right place. And, they're still under $500.
If the women don't find you handsome...they should at least find you handy.
