Random Assault Rifle Question
« on: March 21, 2009, 07:39:13 PM »
As I mentioned earlier Gander Mt. sent me nice flier today advertising a big gun sale (Bastards!). I had decided that no, I really don't need an assault rifle, although I had given thought to a Saiga. My Insurance comany and Visa talked me out of it. But then, the aforementioned bastards at Gander aided and abeted by M58 with his photo his hog taken with an AR convinced me that if Obama can call on us to stimulte the economy, who am I to argue?
The question is this. They advertise a rifle by FN (a company with a solid rep in the tactical feild ;)) called the FNH AR in .308.
I know nothing about this gun but getting what looks like an AR 10 platform? for $1500 got my attention. Good hunting caliber, good for WTSHTF situaions as well. Does anyone have any knowledge about this platform. Bonus points if you say it sucks and only a commie  or a PETA member would be caught dead with it. :)

I plead no contest  ;D

I'm the one with the gun pictures taken in my place of business (where I'm not supposed to have them by the way), but I did not post the piggy picture.  Can't remember who the lucky guy was, but it twernt me.

By the way, I can understand that monthly thank you from Visa at the end of each month, but what did your insurance company have to do with the purchase of a fine sport utility rifle (I refuse to call them assault anything unless we are going to start labeling things like bats, clubs, crowbars, fists, knives, etc. as assault)?

Saiga in .308 is the best buy at under 400.00 along with their other line up.

I shot the factory prototype last year, and it was impressive. Essentially, it is a militarized version of the gas piston Browning BAR hunting rifle:

http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/firearms/detail.asp?value=002B&cat_id=031&type_id=331

Here's the FN AR pages:

http://www.fnhusa.com/le/products/firearms/family.asp?fid=FNF049&gid=FNG022

The Browning guns in .300 Win Mag have been used by some special forces groups for long-range work, so the FNH rifles makes a lot of sense. I've never shot an FNH product that wasn't exactly what they said it was. I talked to the FNH instructors at SHOT about the new rifle, and I suspect there's one in my future.

My only caveat is magazine interchangeability...it's a (pricey) proprietary mag...FNH offers 5, 10 and 20 round mags, but at the current pricing (I've seen 'em at over $100 on GunBroker for 20 rounders), 10 mags would almost buy you another gun. In an ideal world, any 7.62 MCBR would be able to use the dirt cheap H&K G3 mags (less than $5 if you look around) or at least metric FAL mags, which can still be found for $10 a pop.

The good folks at USAA sent me my bill, car, renters, watercraft. T'aint cheap here in sunny south Florida. I drive a ten year old  F150 4wd (and plan on driving it another ten because God I love that truck) and I haven't had a ticket in over 15 years. The annual bite is still about $1500 though (twice what I paid in Indiana five years  and 40 thousand miles ago). Have I mentioned I miss Texas on this board yet?

Bless you sir. You are a fine human being and a great American. I was thinking that it would use the FN FAL mags (call me silly). The fact that that they're proprietary is bad enough having been burned by Ruger with the mini 14, but $100? Lord, I could probably just pay someone to go away for that, and boy, my  Ruger .270 is a great hunting rifle! All though I should yell at you for spoiling my fun, thanks for being the voice of reason (spoilsport). >:(

I'd appreciate anything and everything you can tell me about it. I kind of gave up on the 7.62x39 just because of all the mods required to get it to take decent hicap mags. In .308 hoever, 10+1 rounds is plenty, not only because of the weight factor, but because if you need the 12th, you're probably dead.

But the FN AR is sweet even if mags are $100 each, I' get at least 2 5 rounders for hunting and the rest 20's. Needs a GOOD scope to.

Yes Pegleg, it was I, and it was a .223/5.56 not a .308.I was on the .308 AR band wagon, until the magazine issue came up, none of them are cheap, period, even affordable. So I will stick with my M1A's, not because mags are cheap, but because I already have so many. I have an FN SPR, precision rifle, with detachable box mag, it took me 2 years to get 2 extra mags. I think anyone should look into extra mags, before purchasing anything, and buy them 1st, before the firearm, in today's climate, It can be a killer. The FNH AR, is cool, but check availability of mags 1st, or you will be caught short, and maybe very short, like I was.
