Name that ammo!

I picked up four 60 round bandoliers of this stuff on stripper clips at a show for $20 bucks.  The guy had crates and crates of Russian ammo, and at this price.  I figured I'd just buy a rifle to match it.  Still not sure what it is yet though!  Thats a Russian cycle and star between the T & C on the headstamp.

I just compared it to 8x57 mauser ammo.  I think thats it!  The cases measure almost identical with calipers  Mauser ammo with a cycle and star???

Would be COOL.  I already have the gun.

Edit:  That HAS to be it.  I dug out some old '55 vintage Mauser FMJ ammo and its box says 7.9, and all measurments are +/- .001" between the two.  A cycle and star though???

Just cause I'm a stickler for this stuff...

The Hammer & Sickle with Star was the flag of the Soviet Union (not Russia) from 1923 to 1991.  The Russion flag is red, white and blue.

Nice find though....

It's a crescent moon and a star. As in the Turkish flag. It is Mauser ammo.

Anti: I think some of you gentleman would choose to apply a gun shaped remedy to any problem or potential problem that presented itself? Your reverance (sic) for firearms is maintained with an almost religious zeal. The mind boggles! it really does...

Me: Naw, we just apply a gun-shaped remedy to those extreme life threatening situations that call for it. All the less urgent problems we're willing to discuss.

Did you know what it was before you bought it?

"Did I know what it was before I bought it?"

Honestly.  NOPE!  It was bigger than .308, in perfect condition, & CHEAP!  I figured it was worth getting a couple hundred rounds for $20 bucks and finding a gun I liked to match it once I knew what it was, or one of my friends would surely want it for something they had.  (the kid selling the stuff said "Its Russian, should be stamped with its size.  Thats all I know." ::)

From what I've read its not terrible stuff.  But.  Silver bullets are worrisome!  Corrosive powder and primers, steel bullets?, what worse could you do to a gun?!?  Pee down the barrel to clean it?

Should have my new springs tommarow.  So my 48 will be up and running.  I hope. :-\
