Apples to Plums the S&W629PP is my Pin"Destroyer"Gun. I love it. The only thing Ruger has over smith is the longer cylinder if you wanted to handload long/superwieghts bullets which I do not. Some argue over the Rugers strength over the Smith and unless you plan to redline-charge every round then this is a silly point. I can not find the breaking point of a Smith with Factory loads or FFL reloaded Ammo. Serious! And the Smith customer service is hands down the KING!

Rugers are bullet proof (no pun)  I had a 29 and it was not good at all, shaved every shot, soon sold it. I would however give them another chance because I like the ergonomics over the ruger. The Taurus looks good and you still have the Colt. I would give the Taurus a hard look.

S&W 629 hands down (and I LIKE Rugers).  Shoots super accurate, great 'feel' and as strong as it needs to be.

I gave my Son a Smith 629 to go with his Henry Big Boy 44 and he has good results using the same loads in both.
A single action may have a little more nostalgic feel as a companion gun to a lever gun but what the heck. ;D
As has been said, not all loads in 44 Magnum have to be hotrod loads to get good performance.

Bottom line is you are not going to go wrong with either gun.  It really depends on if you want a single action or a double action more so than Smith vs. Ruger.  I have owned both, and both are good guns.
