Sight Pin
« on: August 16, 2007, 05:07:33 AM »
Last night I couldn't hit a target at 25 yds with my Sig GSR...after fiddling around a little I realized that the tubular pin in the front sight had worked out, was sticking out of the sight, and the front sight was moving all around.
Never had that happen before

I took a small tool and gently tapped the pin down again (not quite flush to the sight) and proceeded to shoot well, but the pin started working it's way out again.

I'm accustomed to tools and I think the pin needs to be expanded a little, but I haven't worked on guns much and I don't want to do anything "El-Wrongo".
SO I'M ASKING....What's the right thing to do with the pin, and could I drive it in too far, etc. etc. etc. I don't have a smith nearbye and it's something I can do. I just don't want to do the wrong thing.
Thanks!

Hey, Jaybethel.  I would let the pin come out a little more until you can remove the front sight. Then look in the dovetail to see if there is a companion hole for the pin to go in, on the slide. If there is, I would reinstall the front sight with a dab of blue thread locker ( loctite ) in the dove tail and on the pin. Using a roll pin punch, tap it back into the companion hole in the slide until it is firmly seated.  If there is no hole in the slide, I would either use red thread locker, or drill a hole for the pin to enter.  Another trick I have used for my customers is to center the front sight, then drill and tap through one leg on the side of the sight, going through the sight and into the slide. The hole is tapped through both and a set screw is fitted below flush. Will not come loose, but can be removed in the future.

Side note, I play a Tokai strat, one of the lawsuit models from 1984. white with a maple neck. 5 position p/up switch. Fast and sweet.  For big noise I use a jackson flying V, and for mucho mellow the Gibson es345 LUCILLE. All are played through a Randall RG100 head, with a slant back mesa boogie 2 x 10 cabinet. Good for a pretty big room.

Good luck.

Thanks m25operator,
There is a hole in the slide- but I'm not sure if it goes completely through the slide. A guy I know slightly from the range told me to use locktite too but, not to be insulting, but I didn't know if he really knows anything or not. I guess I should get a few basic smithing tools for such problems. Anyway, thanks for the advice...I'm sure it will do the trick.

On your side note; I've never tried Randall- I've been using big Line 6's for about 10 years. They're modeling amps and I like that because I can get a sound no matter how small the room is. Bad news is, I catch crap from "tube nazis". I don't mind though. The strat is a Fender but about the only thing original is the mahogany body- that one is my fat strat. I call it Frankenstrat because of all the parts, which are probably worth about three times what I paid for the guitar originally. I have some others that are pretty stock- my favorite being a maple neck with noiseless pickups ( a must in some of the dumps I work in because of they're electrical systems),

Be sure to degrease the dovetail and the sight before using the loctite.  I prefer the red (hi-strength) loctite over the blue (medium strength) on a pistol front sight.  The bond is stronger.  Windage adjustments are done by drifiting the rear sight.  Also allow, as per instructions, sufficeint time for the loctite to cure.

Send it back to SIG or at least let them know about it. This is a great precaution for the "Just-in-case" and also it may help them realize/solve (maybe?!?!) a problem which can be solved for future customers.

FYI man my S&W1911s never had that prob.  :D

I agree with Tex if you can live without it for awhile, but you have some sound advice from the others.

I appreciate the advice but, a) I JUST got the gun and have only fired about 200 rounds through it, and b) I live in NJ which means I have to take it to a dealer and pay them to send it to Sig, talk to them through the dealer, then have them ship it back to him, then pick it up from the dealer. Otherwise when I send it away (according to NJ) it's not mine and I have to go back to the dealer to get it with a new purchase license. That's how it was explained to me. I think I'll just Loctite the pin and call it a day.
Sometimes I wish I lived in the wide open spaces like  some of you folks, but then I wouldn't have the beach and all. Besides, being here I probably need to own arms more than most.

I hear you...Everyone thinks Jersey is the land of the Sopranos...
When I was a kid you could see turds floating around at the beach. These days they test water at the beaches every few days. If they find any coliform the beach is closed. Another good sign is the dolphin...if things weren't tidy they wouldn't be out there playing and feeding within yards of the beach every day. (No dolphin when I was a kid- they weren't invented yet)

Funny story, though...up the road somewhere like Long Beach Island they had pumped sand up onto the beach (beach replenishment for you landlubbers) and evidently there was a bunch of WWi or WWII ordinance dumped out where they picked up the sand. The stuff started turning up on the beach this past spring. They had to close the beach and the feds came in and collected the stuff for about a month. There was a small article in the paper last week that the feds weren't going to charge the town for collecting the ordinance. Ha.  You'd think a pump or pipe would have exploded or something when they were collecting the sand.

Oh...did you say "beaches" or "b.....
