A bill that would get rid of background checks for concealed-carry permit holders who are interested in purchasing a firearm has fired up both sides of the gun-rights issue.

Proponents of House Bill 1180 say the background checks are redundant because the gun owners were checked when they originally got their concealed-carry permits — which last five years — while opponents claim the bill would end up with more weapons in the wrong hands.

Rep. Steve King, R-Grand Junction, one of the bill’s sponsors, said the legislature should focus on getting rid of the hurdles that stand in the way of the “law-abiding residents of Colorado.”

“These are all honest, hardworking citizens,” he said. “That is their right to own guns.”

However, opponents of the bill said the lack of a reliable central database of concealed-carry permit holders, and the permits lasting for five years, makes it impossible for firearms dealers to tell if the buyers are, in fact, “honest, hardworking citizens.”

While some people who have a gun permit and commit a felony within the five years will have their permit revoked by the sheriff or police, Eileen McCarron, president of Colorado Ceasefire Capitol Fund, said there is no guarantee that everyone who has a permit is “clean for life.”

“The whole point of background checks is to keep prohibited buyers from getting guns,” she said. “Domestic violence, people with restraining orders, people who are mentally ill … we don’t want these people buying guns, and now we are going to give a bypass to checking people who were at one date fine.”

McCarron added that if HB 1180 passes, it would be possible for felons to get a counterfeit certificate and have “free reign” to buy whatever they want at a gun show.

Dudley Brown, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, shot down McCarron’s argument, saying there is no proof that anyone has ever used a forged certificate to buy a gun.

“I don’t see one shred of evidence that they have been forged,” he said. “I would love for someone to show me one case of this happening.”

McCarron fired back, saying there hasn’t been a need for forged certificates because they would be useless under the current background checks. However, if HB 1180 passed and firearms dealers weren’t required to conduct the background checks, “there would be a great big incentive for counterfeit permits,” she said.

Thats the way things run in SC too. When I bought my Kel-Tec, all I had to do was fill out the store papers (sign off on the serial number I received and acknowledge all defects had to be handled through manufacturer) and they took a photocopy of my DL and CCW....... Then I swiped my credit card and headed out the door.

Believe it or not, I can go buy a firearm any day of the week, takes about twenty minutes.....no limits either...

We just can't sell or give away more than four a year as private transfers...

Here in Iowa folks who do not have a CCW are required to secure a "Permit To Purchase" for handguns.  THis permit is good for a year from the date of issue, and can be used to purchase however many handguns the premit holder chooses.  For those of us who have CCW's, those are considered our permits to purchase, and a seperate permit is not required.

One other thing..........you better not try to swipe MY credit card, bud!!

You can then click the links at the top for history and ammendments, etc.
