Tactical Rifle with Erik - What do you want to see
« on: April 13, 2009, 01:37:58 PM »

Hi folks!

On April 21st, we will spend the day at the range with Erik Lund filming some in-depth tactical videos for DRTV.

I talked to Erik this morning about what we want to do and Erik came up with a great idea....

Let the DRTV members decide what they want to see.

So.... all of you are now the producers...

Marshal'ette and I will be your film crew, Eric is the instructor and you decide the content.

It is all about basic and advanced use of the AR-15.

We are all ears....

Id like to see the basic combat load for an operator in the field on a days mission. ie, how many mags, what other gear should be taken and things of this nature.

I think segment on maintenance would be good.

We hear so many conflicting ideas.  Really wet, mostly dry, just run the bore and give it a good oil, replace the gas rings every 'x' rounds etc.  Eric is an expert.  Have him demo his care and maintenance.

Also for those of us that don't have the tactical slings (single point I think they are called) how about show a manual of arms in where / how to carry under diff situations (I mean carry position). High ready, low ready etc.

I'll try to think of more.

Optics visa vie rifle choices.  That is, I want to see correct optics choices for rifles setup for different missions.

A big +1 on the maintenance. There are so many different opinions on how much lube, type of lube, what spare parts to keep on hand, etc. Another is in the area of magazines. Which are better and why. I can't count the conflicting opinions I've heard on this as well. Part of the reason for this is the fact the AR-15 is an immensely popular rifle. It would be nice to see all of this sorted out in a what is good, and what is not, format.  Bill T.

BIG plus one on that!  and once again, are titanium firing pins worth the cost, better springs, etc.

This is almost starting to sound like an abbreviated armorers course (sweet!)

Maintenance and optics info would be good.

Maybe a tutorial on how to use irons and forget the optics. Batteries die, lens crack,or lose there zero. What to oil and how much and also what to check for when things a wearing out.

Reloading from tactical gear. (seems a lot of tactical equipment focuses on retention more than ease of use)
Getting back to basics instead of all the accessorized crap.
Using a light on an AR (I know, probably conflicts with above).

The other ideas are great, what I would like to see, is the capability of the standard AR15, carbine or not, to at least 200 meters, and maybe beyond,I have found it to be much more accurate than you might think. Different sighting systems to allow 300+ meter hits on a given target. It is no longer, your father or grandfathers AR. I still own an SP1, and with 55 grn pills, delivers, good, acceptable groups at 200 yards.
