12 Gauge! Most urban needs for any weapon fall within 75 yards. The shotgun is probably the most versatile firearm. The shotgun is effective at close range and out past 100 yards with slugs. And there isn't a whole lot more effective than a 12 gauge slug. I hope we're never called to see times like that.

Whichever one you presently have works best!

Would like an FAL and lots of 7.62, but have ARs and 5.56, so that's an easy decision for me. I've been talking to special forces type guys lately and they're telling me they're opting for heavy bullet 5.56 (77-grain) out of a heavy barrel AR over 7.62 because of the bullet-proof reliability of the AR system. There is still 5.56 around in places (you have to look really hard), and magazines aren't an issue...

MB is spot on about what ever you have is probably the best.  For a handgun, a 1911, lots of ammo, magazines, and parts around.
I would not dismiss a 9mm.,.38/357. or a .40cal.
A .22 is even worthwhile.

if you have a barrel in a 1-9 twist can you get the rifling re done ? for better performance out of a heavier bullet?

Work great for any game you would need to take, kills people just as dead.  You can have lots of ammo on hand.  If it really gets bad they will be like gold and you could trade them for things.
