CFS Course in Delaware, OH: AAR.
« on: April 20, 2009, 05:31:04 AM »
We finished up an especially interesting Combat Focus Shooting course yesterday here in Delaware, OH.

I taught here last year also, at the outstanding Black Wing Shooting Center (an NASR 5 Start facility). Again, we had a full class, but this class had a particularly diverse set of students. It was probably the biggest spread of natural abilities and previous experience that I've had in one class in quite some time. That kind of extreme mix always makes the course more interesting, in order to try to accommodate everyone's needs at any given point. It also means that people get to see and hear things that they might not otherwise have been exposed to if everyone in the course were at the same level. Every CFS Course is a little different, but this one was certainly very comprehensive. The nature of the questions and abilities that came from the students meant that we really covered a wide territory.

DRTV's our Don W. was in the class as well! It is always good to have a regular from one of the forums attend a course and he did very well!

We've got another course in Ohio later this week at another range.... details on that one this weekend!

This class was, what's the word, awesome! In my opinion, if you choose to use a handgun for personal defense (in the home or conceal carry), this is a required course.

I've bought the books and DVD's of several of the "top" trainers in the US over the years and ended up thinking, yep that is good training but it is not exactly how I want to train. I bought Rob's stuff, reviewed it and decided his material was spot on to what I was after.

What I couldn't know is how Rob taught the class. I was impressed with the way he handled the very different types of people in the class. There were a couple of guys who were challenged by their choice of handgun and for one guy his holster. Rob took them under his wing and beat the hell out them...and they loved him for it! At the end of the class their shooting was dramatically improved. I know because we were tasked to keep up with each others progress.

We shot mostly in close 12 feet but also at 6 feet and out to 32 and 40 feet. Lots of moment. Lots. We even had to do math in our heads while we shot!

While Many of the drills can be practiced at your local range (movement will be limited of course) and I fully intend to practice what I can on my little backyard range, I intend to take this class every year as long as it is offered in my area. In my opinion, this is about the best training material you can get that will prepare you to defend yourself with a handgun.

[Rob, when did you say the check would arrive?]

Hey Rob, I found out CFS is coming to pelham NH in may. I'm trying to scrape up some money to go.(hopefully there is a slot open) I was wondering if any prerequisites are required to attend other than basic firearm safety and handeling?

Thanks, Don... Glad you liked the course!  (I'll send you a shirt so you can give that speech again when people ask what "I.C.E." is. :) )

BuckT,

Unfortunately, that course has been postponed... but when you do get a chance to get together with us on the range, there are no pre-requisites for the CFS courses!

Thanks for your interest.
