Conversion Kits for the AR, 338 Lapua
« on: April 23, 2009, 12:43:43 AM »
Okay, I am looking to get a .338 Lapua conversion kit for my AR. I want something that I can take a deer or elk with.
Any reason why I should not get it?

I am going to get the Tactical Solutions Internally Silenced 22lr upper also, and I was contemplating the 50 BMG as well.
I could get all three for the price of a regular rifle and then buy optics for the 22lr and a swapable one for the other two.

I've never seen these. Could you post some links or pics?   Bill T.

I've been toying with the idea of getting into the .50 Browning cartridge for quite some time. The issues for me are size, (you almost need a separate safe for it they are so large.) Where to shoot it?, (there is only 1 range here in Phoenix that allows them, and it is a 50+ mile drive for me.) All specialized reloading equipment, (it requires a special press, dies, priming tools, and powder measures). All of these thing must be taken into account, unless you are simply buying it to "have", and to realize the possible increase in value if they in fact do get banned. I'm going to one of the major gun shows here this weekend, so we'll see.  Bill T.

While a 50 would/could be fun, I am more interested in a 338. I wanted something I could hunt deer and elk with.

One of the uncles is SWAT sniper in a major Texas city.  A couple years ago I remember talking to him about is work gear.  They shoot 300 Win Mag, but he looked into .50 BMG.  He got shot down not for the cost of the rifle, $5000, but the cost of ammo.  They've got to shoot thousands of rounds and they weren't going for it in .50 BMG.  To give you an idea, his last rifle work rifle I saw was $15,000 so that $5000 wasn't an issue.  But it looks like BMG is going down in price from what I've seen, the gun is another issue.  I'd say go for it. ;D

The Bohica Arms conversions are all single-shot bolt-actions.

And? I am going hunting, I only need one shot.
It is also far less expensive than a 338 automatic rifle and since the range that I currently shoot at restricts you to one round in the rifle at a time, it is not a big deal.

If I need something that will fire a whole ton of bullets in a short period of time, I have 4 30 round Magpul magazines, 2 40 round magazines, one 20 round magazine, 2 10 round magazines, two 8 round magazines and one seven round magazine...I think I have it covered.

Uh-oh. You said the "C" word.
