Because my grandmother is Irish, Adelaide Sullivan, as I alluded to in that thread, and so I can get away it. Also, I wasn't making fun of the Irish, I was making fun of Tom, and that's always allowed.
As I said, I'm not exhibiting any great moral outrage over a harmless joke that was meant with no malice at all. All I'm saying is that all of us, particularly now, need to be mindful of the need to reach out to folks, and not inadvertantly drive them away.

Going to have to call BS on that!! Because your grandmother is Irish, you can make fun of the Irish? What kind of donkey sense does that make? That's another reason this country is getting more and more screwed up. Everyone crying for equality and at the same time saying you can't say this or that because we are different, we aren't equals. So which one is it?
The statement of "I can make fun of my own kind but you can't because you are a different ethnically then me" is one of the most racist thoughts out there. It's automatically setting up differences that get pointed out and thrown in your face. Not by the people cracking jokes or making observations, but by the people that are so concerned about everyone being a racist pig, that they themselves fail to see how stupid they really are. For example, you tell a black person they are terrible at their job, the main response you'll get is, "It's cause I'm black right?!?!" No, it's because you suck at your job. Nothing to do with skin tone.
Just so freaking sick of people too wussy and tender-footed to speak their minds, to have freeness of speech, because so many people out there are holding their race card. As soon as you say something, they hold it up, wave it in your face, and call you a racist. So big whoop-dee-freaking-do if the president is black. Haven't once seen anyone on here say they didn't like him because of the pigmentation of his skin. It's because he SUCKS at his job.
Also, during the Bush presidency, you couldn't turn on the TV without seeing someone commenting how stupid this country-bumpkin sounds when he speaks or how dumb of a redneck he is. (In case you didn't know it, redneck is a 'racist' term.)* People made jokes of all kinds at his expense. Not once did I see someone say, "HEY, you can't do that! He's WHITE!!" Tired of the double standard set by a bunch of pansies. I didn't own slaves, my dad didn't, his dad didn't and his dad before him didn't.
So to hell with anyone that says you can't make jokes about BHO "because he's black". So damn what. His skin is slightly darker then mine. He is still a damned idiot that is going to put this country so deep in a hole it won't be able to claw it's way back for a very long time. And hey, it is common sense that someone with dark skin will fade into a dark room more so then someone with lighter skin, leaving just the bright reflective spots showing prominently.
Done now. Going to find my blood pressure medicine.
